Think you have to head outside of city limits to test your balance and tone your abs with one of the trendiest water sports? Whether you’re a beginner or itching to practice your downward dog on a board, here's where to get in on the paddleboarding (SUP) action without leaving Chicago.
There’s no better place to view the Chicago skyline than from the middle of Lake Michigan. Take in the sights on a shoreline tour of the city with Kayak Chicago, which has been showing Chicagoans the paddleboarding ropes since 2006. Also offered: lessons for the uninitiated, sunset paddles, rentals, and stand up paddleboard yoga for adventurous types. 200 W. Montrose Harbor Dr., 312-852-9258
Get fit with Chicago Paddle Co., which offers pilates, yoga, and core exercise classes (complete with resistance bands) all atop a paddleboard. Stand up paddleboard lessons, rentals, and social paddles are also available. 5800 N. Lakeshore Dr., 312-970-0861
Hit North Avenue Beach for stand up paddleboard lessons, rentals, and yoga with Chicago SUP. They also hold community paddles, where you can cruise the lakefront with fellow adventurers. For less waves and wind, Chicago SUP also operates in Diversey Harbor—perfect for a refreshing yoga practice. North Avenue Beach, 1603 N. Lake Shore Dr.; Diversey Harbor, 2416 N. Cannon Dr., 773-575-4787
Paddle out for a fun session at one of two beautiful locations. For a unique workout, Rogers Park's Centered Studios partners with the Leone Beach location to marry stand up paddleboarding with a fun yoga practice. Enjoy 30 minutes of downward dog on the beach, followed by an hour of yoga on the water. Leone Beach, 1222 W. Touhy Ave., 773-791-8983; River Park, 3024-3032 W. Argyle St., 773-710-6038.
Take an hour to yourself to paddle around the beautiful 31st St. Harbor, or practice balance and tone your core with a stand up paddleboard yoga class. 31st St. Harbor, 3155 S. Lake Shore Dr., 312-924-7994
