Pork shoulder with squash, pumpkin seed, ciabatta, and fennel jus is a standout main at The Monarch.
This fall, a new autumnal menu makes The Monarch the perfect place to warm up on a cold evening. Chef Michael DeStefano incorporates the season’s richest flavors—from butternut squash to pumpkin seeds to apples—into dishes fit for the eatery’s sovereign namesake.
Definitely start with an appetizer at The Monarch, whether it be an order of P.E.I. mussels or our current favorite, the Burgundy snails with roasted garlic, shallot confit, and baguette. Or choose more casual starters like wings, fries with truffle mayonnaise, and a tasty soft pretzel with beer cheese. When it comes to the main course, DeStefano’s pork shoulder dish is one of the most seasonal, with accoutrements like squash, pumpkin seeds, fennel jus, and ciabatta. If you’re in the mood for something handheld, try the tasty fried green tomato sandwich, which gets a kick from jalapeno cream cheese.
After dinner, stick around for drinks as the scene transforms into a nightspot. Try one of the many royalty-themed cocktails like the Czarina Alexandra, made with Charles de Fere brut and Sobieski Bizon Grass vodka. 1745 W. North Ave., Wicker Park, 773-252-6053
