The Joffrey Ballet’s reimagined Nutcracker returns to usher in the holiday season.
It was one of the city’s biggest cultural stories of 2016: After more than a quarter-century, the Joffrey Ballet unveiled a world-premiere reinvention of its beloved holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. And if company founder Robert Joffrey’s previous version had charmed Chicago audiences, this new iteration—created by an all-star team including choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and lighting designer Natasha Katz (both Tony winners for An American in Paris) and Obie- and Drama Desk Award-winning puppeteer Basil Twist, among others—speaks even more intimately to a local crowd, setting the action in the White City of Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair. Both deeply nostalgic and strikingly fresh, the production returns for its second year already feeling like a classic. Dec. 1-30, Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress Parkway, 312.386.8905, joffrey.org
