Jerzy is a DJ at Studio Paris and River West/West Town resident.
Oak Park native Jerzy, a resident DJ at Studio Paris and on-air personality for B96, travels to the East Coast this weekend to join huge acts like The Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, and Jake Owen in performing during the Bud Light Hotel’s Super Bowl concert weekend (Jerzy’s sets are Friday, January 31 and Saturday February 1; 10:30 p.m.; jerzymuzik.com/events/ for more information).
Back in Chicago he’s a River West/West Town resident and man-about-town; here, he shares his go-to spots.
Where in your neighborhood would you go for...
...a quick lunch (and do you have a go-to order)? JERZY: Hands down DeLux Bar & Grill(669 N. Milwaukee Ave., 312-850-4008). It is a little neighborhood spot with great food, a cool atmosphere, and a quick stumble across the street after a long night. You must get the buffalo chicken sliders! Speaking of late night, you can't skip on a pie slice from Pie-Eyed Pizza(1111 W. Chicago Ave., 312-243-3735). It is open until 5 a.m. on the weekends, and the place turns into everyone's official after-hours party.
…a special occasion dinner? J: I'm a big fan of classic Italian. La Scarola(721 W. Grand Ave., 312-243-1740) has been a staple in this area for quite some time. Right when you walk in, the restaurant gives you the feeling of an old-school gangster movie. Just don't say the wrong thing or you'll be walking out in cement shoes.
...a nightcap drink (and what’s your cocktail)? J: The Dawson(730 W. Grand Ave., 312-243-8955) just opened and so far it's been the new go-to spot for drinks in the area. Richard's Bar (491 N. Milwaukee Ave., 312-733-2251) is the classic dive bar with a nostalgic feel. The place is filled with neon signs, old photos, and gasp...a payphone!
...any other neighborhood favorites? J: The Matchbox(770 N. Milwaukee Ave., 312-666-9292) is great for drinks, and doesn't fit more than 29 people. It is an easy way to get close with someone...literally!
What are some of your favorite spots in the city to listen to other DJs and find inspiration? J: Studio Paris(59 W. Hubbard St., 312-595-0800) is one of my favorites, and I'm not just saying that because I DJ there. They bring in great talent from around the country, and it's always good to hear what's being played in other cities. I'm also a fan of The MID(306 N. Halsted St., 312-265-3990). It's a solid late-night spot to hear A-list talent.
What in the city have you not yet done or seen, that you hope to do in 2014? J: My travel schedule was a bit crazy last summer, as I was fortunate to experience some amazing cities while DJing. However, nothing is like being back home. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to check out more street festivals this year. I'm a huge fan of the Roscoe Village Burger Fest (July 12-13, 2014), yum. I also want to try my fair share of food trucks. They're really on the come-up here and offer some of the city's best food on four wheels.
