Piloxing, which originated in Hollywood, has made its way east to The Wellness Center in Arlington Heights, packing a powerful punch of a workout into one simple package. In addition to the Wellness Center's classes, the fun regimen is gaining citywide acclaim just in time for peak bikini season. Piloxing is now on the schedule at XSport Fitness (819 S. State St., 312-294-0500), Posture Perfect Pilates (1247 S. Wabash Ave., 312-675-2981), Core Chicago (2549 N. Racine Ave.,773-296-9660), and other fitness spots.
As the name suggests, piloxing is a combination of pilates and boxing, and also incorporates elements of dance. Created by Viveca Jensen, a Swedish dancer and celebrity trainer in Los Angeles, it burns calories and strengthens even the most obscure muscles.
“The standing pilates exercises strengthen the abdominal and back muscles, which improve posture and make movement safe,” said Lori Young, piloxing instructor at The Wellness Center. “The [weighted] gloves tone and sculpt the arms without being too heavy to cause injury—they allow participants to throw more precise punches. After just one class, you’ll feel the difference in your arms, and after a few sessions you’ll see arm definition forming.”
Although it isn’t yet ubiquitous, Young says piloxing’s popularity is just beginning. “Anyone who wants to improve both their cardiovascular system and create stronger, leaner muscles has to try this workout.” Count us in. 900 W. Central Rd., Arlington Heights, 847-618-3500
