Kentucky-bred Maker's Mark ($22.99) is heralded as a product of the oldest operating bourbon distillery in the world, made using a family recipe and red winter wheat instead of rye to create the sophisticated, smooth fl avor. A premium bourbon, Maker’s Mark has always been a component in the classic cocktail—think of the Old Fashioned, or Kentucky Derby favorite, the Mint Julep (stsock your liquor cabinet for this year’s Derby on May 1). Here, The Drawing Room’s head mixologist, Charles Joly, offers up a recipe with the makings of a new classic, for race day or any day:
2 oz. Maker’s Mark
1⁄4 oz. maple syrup
1⁄2 oz. Navan Natural Vanilla liqueur
1⁄2 tsp. freshly grated ginger
3 dashes orange bitters
Flamed orange peel
Combine fi rst 4 ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice, shake and strain through a tea sieve to remove ginger. Top with bitters and fl amed orange peel.
