Alicia Roman is a meteorologist for NBC 5 and a West Loop resident.
As temperatures drop, we turn to NBC 5 meteorologist (and one of Michigan Avenue’s “Real Beauties”) Alicia Roman for her favorite neighborhood go-tos on snowy winter days. Though originally from the Pittsburgh area, Roman has been in Chicago for two years—this holiday season, she’s toasting many more to come.
When it’s too cold to travel far, where might you go for drinks in your West Loop neighborhood? ALICIA ROMAN: For watching sports, Haymarket(737 W. Randolph St., 312-638-0700), Crossroads(1120 W. Madison St., 312-243-1113), and West End(1326 W. Madison St., 312-981-7100) are great. If you like beer, you can’t go wrong with Beer Bistro(1061 W. Madison St., 312-433-0013). RM Champagne(116 N. Green St., 312-243-1199) [is great] for a quiet weekend night; I love the ambiance there. If you are feeling nostalgic, go to Richard’s (491 N. Milwaukee Ave., 312-733-2251). I love the old-school style, posters of great movies and photos, and the jukebox playing Sinatra and The Stones. [It has] some of my favorite bartenders, too.
How about for dinner? AR: Grab dinner at Nellcôte(833 W. Randolph St., 312-432-0500) or Girl and the Goat(809 W. Randolph St., 312-492-6262). I still need to try Viaggio(1330 W. Madison St., 312-829-3333); I haven’t been there yet. I could go on and on….
Sometimes it’s just too cold. Where do you like to order delivery from? AR: Ordering in? I go to Butterfly Sushi(1131 W. Madison St., 312-997-9988)—I crave their shrimp rolls!
Just for fun—and to reminisce on warmer weather—what are your go-to outdoor spots? AR: How can you resist sitting outside, basking in the sun, and eating delicious Greek food in [nearby] Greektown? Athena(212 S. Halsted St., 312-655-0000) has the awesome atrium and retractable roof in case it rains; and it is always fun sitting outside at 9 Muses(315 S. Halsted St., 312-902-9922). Also, I love taking walks; the West Loop is really dog-friendly.
Any other neighborhood favorites? AR: One of my favorite spots is a wine market called Madison Vine Wines(1340 W. Madison St., 312-526-3857); a friend of mine owns it with her family. It is such a nice family-owned establishment that offers wine and beer tastings, live music, and is pet-friendly, too. I [also] love popping into the Tribeca Boutique(1035 W. Madison St., 312-492-9373)—easy if you need an outfit quickly, [and] it is also always good to buy local.
