The Magnificent Mile’s sleekly revamped Louis Vuitton flagship store pays homage to the brand’s Chicago ties.
Legendary architect Peter Marino’s intricate exterior facade beckons wellheeled shoppers into a world of luxury.
Chicago may be the Second City, but we were first when it came to fashion house Louis Vuitton’s vaunted U.S. debut: The now-iconic Louis Vuitton trunks were initially showcased at the 1893 World’s Fair right here in Chicago, where trunk maker George Vuitton hoped to expand the brand outside of Paris and grow an exclusive, international, cosmopolitan clientele. Among this elite group of newfound customers was Marshall Field’s younger sister, Laura Field Dibblee. Married to real estate mogul Henry Dibblee, she was one of the first owners of a Louis Vuitton trunk in the United States. It comes as no surprise, then, that Marshall Field’s became Chicago’s first Louis Vuitton retailer in 1905—and that long-standing relationship between the iconic luxury brand and Chicago makes the newly redesigned Louis Vuitton store on Michigan Avenue especially unique.
After a nearly year-long renovation and expansion, the retail area has increased by 40 percent. Vuitton’s in-demand home line, Objets Nomades, which has limited availability elsewhere, is on permanent display here; expect to find curated pieces spread throughout the store. Designed by legendary architect Peter Marino, the exterior facade features an intricate bronze pattern—an abstraction of the brand’s signature checkerboard Damier print—lit up along Michigan Avenue and Walton Street.
After a nearly yearlong renovation, the Louis Vuitton boutique boasts 40 percent more retail space.
Inside, a French limestone foyer, Marino’s carefully selected furnishings, and hard wood floors all contribute to the luxurious world of Vuitton, beckoning guests to shop and explore. Equally tantalizing: The Louis Vuitton Petite Malle and the Twist PM handbag, both in silver Epi leather and exclusive to the store. Given the brand’s rich history with the city, it’s a full-circle fashion moment indeed. 919 N. Michigan Ave., 312.944.1096, louisvuitton.com
