Remember the Dallas and Dynasty era of the ’80s, when conspicuous consumption was the ultimate fantasy? How times have changed. Today, living a life of luxury isn’t just about gathering possessions, it’s about gathering experiences: appreciating the world around you in the richest way possible. Chalk it up to Instagram or millennial influence or both, but in 2018 the ultimate luxury is to have one-of-a-kind adventures (and, of course, post a selfie while you’re at it), taking the time now to live life to the fullest every day.

The ultimate one-of-a-kind adventure is travel, of course, and in this issue we shine a spotlight on three globe-trotting Chicagoans whose voyages for work and play provide them with rich inspiration and creative and spiritual fuel. Reading their colorful personal accounts of meaningful trips may just have you reaching for your passport and planning your own next getaway.

Of course, boundless experiences can be had everywhere in our fair city as well, and this issue presents a stacked list of options: Visit the new wndr museum, complete with a Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrored Room; feast at a slew of restaurants where hearth-cooked food and drinks are front and center; catch one of four must-see productions of Frankenstein onstage in its 200th anniversary year; or take a staycation in one of three incredible new Chicago luxury hotels. Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. And who knows—you might just have the experience of a lifetime.
