Lucky for us Chicagoans, this city knows a thing or two about revelry—especially when it comes to celebrating the holidays. From award-winning Broadway productions to rooftop ice rinks, here are seven ways to count down the days to 2017.
There’s no better place to revel in the holiday spirit than at NoMI, where you can enjoy upscale fare from executive chef Edward Sura while taking in unparalleled views of the Mag Mile and the magnificent lights adorning it this month. The restaurant is just as lively mid-afternoon, when a hot chocolate bar curated by pastry chef Greg Mosko is served (12-5 p.m. daily) to those seeking a post-shopping respite. Park Hyatt Chicago, 800 N. Michigan Ave., 312-239-4030
Chances are you’re already well aware that this winter (and fall, spring, and summer, for that matter) is all about Hamilton, the Broadway phenomenon that’s as educational as it is entertaining. If you can’t score seats to the big-ticket production, consider the three-week run of The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time, which has already garnered five Tony Awards.
This West Loop hangout will look less like a distillery and more like a 1950’s-era department store in December, when they’ll deck out their halls for a month-long holiday pop-up featuring festive drams like a Gingerbread Vodka Mule and a Fortune Cookie Mai Tai. The décor, a nod to mid-century holiday magic complete with frosted windows, Christmas trees, and ornaments, will be just as spirited as the menu. 564 W. Randolph St., 312-707-8780
With the focus surrounding holiday parties and shopping sprees, we’d be remiss to overlook a season that is celebrating another highlight that comes but once a year: truffles. Thankfully, Eataly has us covered with Il Tartufo, a pop-up restaurant with a menu featuring the best funghi findings 2016 has to offer. The Shops at North Bridge, 43 E. Ohio St., 312-521-8700
It doesn’t get much more festive than a stay at this Mag Mile property, which is going all out with a Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas Day brunch, and an epic kaleidoscope-themed New Year’s Eve party in The Lobby, complete with a five-course dinner, Champagne toast, and live music from Sweet Bea and The Boys. To really ring in 2017 right, head up to the terrace’s Sky Rink, a rooftop retreat with a mission—all proceeds benefit the Hephzibah Children’s Home and Lurie’s Children’s Hospital. 108 E. Superior St., 312-337-2888
Round up a group for this free holiday market, which will bring together 50 of the city’s best food, art, and retail vendors across two floors of the Chicago Athletic Association. If you glance down and spot swim lanes, it’s not the Champagne talking—the event is taking place in the “tank,” the property’s former swimming pool. 12 S. Michigan Ave., 312-940-3552
Decadence reigns at Soho House’s The Allis, where you and your posse can settle into a series of high-back velvet seating for an afternoon of finger sandwiches, scones, and fancy cakes. While you’re on premise don’t miss a visit to Fox Bar, which is morphing into a holiday pop-up bar through December. 13-125 N. Green St., 312-521-8000
