As the weather warms up, what better way to enjoy a spring day than out on the links? The Chicagoland area is home to plenty of golf courses, including ones that have racked up awards, been played by champions, and have seriously stunning layouts. Here are just a few to hit up as the temps get higher.
Mistwood Golf Club has certainly received its fair share of accolades—particularly following multimillion-dollar renovations of the course and clubhouse in recent years. The course features sod-wall bunkers reminiscent of Scotland’s internationally-renowned St Andrews Links, as well as five tee placements at each hole, giving guests the ability to play more than 7,000 yards. But Mistwood doesn’t just pride itself on the main course: It also boasts a 5,000-square-foot performance center complete with high-tech training tools. 1700 W. Renwick Rd., Romeoville, 815-254-3333
True, many of the renowned golf courses available to Chicagoans are outside city limits, and hey, we can’t exactly expect to have acres of greens in an urban setting. But Harborside is proof you can play a great game in Chicago, and not even just because of the amazing skyline views. Harborside includes two courses, Port and Starboard (sensing a theme here?), that have earned high praise from top golf publications and players alike. And it’s likely to get even better: The public courses are about to undergo a $1.7 million-renovation. (But fear not: They’ll remain partially open through the process.) 11001 S. Doty Ave. E., Chicago, 312-782-7837
Cantigny Golf Club has been open since 1988, and in its nearly 30 years of business, has won a long list of awards and hosted plenty of high-level tournaments. Today, the golf club boasts three separate courses—Woodside, Lakeside, and Hillside—comprising 27 holes of championship golf, as well as practice areas including climate-controlled hitting bays. And if you’re looking to start your little ones in the game early, Cantigny also offers a 9-hole course specifically for junior players. 27w270 Mack Road, Wheaton, 630-668-8463
Grayslake’s Stonewall Orchard Golf Club is a nature-lover’s dream, with more than 65,000 pine and oak trees, and acres of wetlands, rolling hills, and wildlife. But, of course, the beautiful scenery is the icing on top of the golf course cake. Stonewall Orchard offers a nearly 5,000-yard junior short course in addition to the 7,124-yard, par 72 course; and each cart includes a GPS system so you can get to the know the course while you move through it. 25675 W IL Hwy. 60, Grayslake, 847-740-4890
Eagle Ridge may be a bit more of a trek than the other courses, but that makes it perfect for a fun weekend away. Head out and enjoy all that Galena, a charming riverside town, has to offer, or spend your whole trip relaxing and playing the links at Eagle Ridge. This resort has four golf courses to its name: The General, North Course, and South Course (all 18-hole, par 72s) as well as East Course (a 9-hole, par 34). 444 Eagle Ridge Dr., Galena, 815-777-5000
