Filini’s downstairs Blu Bar brought back its monthly cocktail series—The Art of Mixology—for the second year last month, and will host the March edition on Tuesday (March 26, 6:30 pm). In this iteration, participants will learn the art of a Carroll Gardens cocktail, a twist on the classic Manhattan.

Unlike last year, each monthly class at Blu Bar is now limited to 15 guests, an intimate setting that allows more hands-on time for learning the basics from Filini’s principal bartender Roger Bailey. Bailey begins by leading a demo on how to craft the cocktail, and then gives guests the opportunity to mix it up themselves. He’ll also delve into the background of the ingredients or spirits used, all of which are seasonal or have a connection to the time of year. Another new element to the series in 2013: each month, one participant will be chosen to partake in a cocktail competition at the end of the year.

The Carroll Gardens cocktail class is a quick 30 minutes, but stay after for a little “extra credit”: the light bites bar menu is available until 11 pm. Try the bruschetta carpaccio with thinly sliced beef, aioli, arugula, and parmesan, or get a pizza to share.
