Trading frenetic careers for a life of balance, Jacquelyn and Ryan Brennan create a luxe community fueled by caffeine at Pilates + Coffee.

Jacquelyn and Ryan Brennan were destined to build an active life. The couple’s first date was a seven-mile run on Lake Michigan; for their second, Ryan proffered Cubs playoff tickets. As they built careers— Jacquelyn in the fitness industry, Ryan at a sports marketing firm—they fantasized about opening their own studio, “but it was always risky to leave our jobs,” says Ryan.
Fate ultimately intervened: When Jacquelyn was pregnant with the couple’s first child, the Pilates studio where she taught shuttered, creating the opportune moment for the pair to take the plunge.
“I’d always seen Jacquelyn’s clients walking into the studio carrying coffee cups, and we always felt like the neighborhood needed a space for residents to hang out after a workout,” says Ryan, as he preps an Ipsento latte—exclusive, locally roasted Ipsento espresso, coconut milk, honey and cayenne pepper—in the couple’s newly minted Roscoe Village destination, Pilates + Coffee.
Marrying two of Chicagoans’ favorite morning pursuits in a clean, minimalist space that’s both state-of-the-art and sophisticated, the studio and coffee shop includes six Reformers for group classes (starting at $40) and one Cadillac (from $95 for private sessions), along with all the accoutrements of a high-end Pilates studio.
“We have lawyers and doctors with high-stress jobs who pop in for an hour of class and then a half-hour of coffee reprieve,” she adds. That might include a low-sugar Dona Masala chai from Brooklyn to wash down all-natural bites from Wicker Park’s Scone City. “Almost everything is local and healthful, and nothing is fried,” insists Jacquelyn. “We won’t ever serve doughnuts.”
By chasing their dreams, the couple has also created an upscale community center, where busy professionals can get their adrenaline, caffeine and social fix all in one stunning double-duty studio. Says Ryan, “The coolest part has been the feedback and happiness that comes from the regulars of this communal space.” 2144 W. Roscoe St., 630.749.5729
