Creatures of the Wind
Creatures of the Wind, designed by Chicagoans Shane Gabier and Chris Peters, won runner-up in the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in November. This is one of the highest honors an American fashion designer can win. And yes, they walked away with $100,000. We were in New York with them to celebrate, along with various celebrities and fashion dignitaries, including Anna Wintour, Calvin Klein, and Diane von Furstenburg. The highlight of the night was when the winners were announced, and they both looked at each other without moving. Ikram had to nudge them to stand up to accept the award. It was captured on film, and you can see it on vogue.com. Can you imagine that these fabulous designers were nannies for our twin boys last year?
Our friend Adam Fields’ artspace.com hosted a party on top of the Mondrian Soho to meld fashion and art in honor of the Chicago artist Nick Cave and Ikram. Nick had two gallery openings that week at Jack Shainman and Mary Boone. While Mary Boone presented a wide range of Nick’s well known sound suits, Jack Shainman showed a new monochromatic set, which blew us away.
Under the Sea
We asked our friend and designer from Chicago, Carolyn Rosenberg, to make a pearl collar for Ikram to wear in Paris to the spring-summer 2012 fashion shows. We had no idea how much excitement the collar would stir up at the shows. It was photographed by the paparazzi, including Bill Cunningham from The New York Times, appearing mid-page in his Sunday spread. At one point, as Ikram was walking into the Maison Martin Margiela fashion show while on the telephone, a film crew stormed through the crowd to accost her for an interview. Pearls, it turns out, and other underwater iconography were prevalent at the shows from Chanel’s undersea extravaganza at the Grand Palais to Alexander McQueen’s sea beauties to Peter Pilotto’s patterns and collaboration with stylist and swimwear designer Lisa Marie Fernandez. Carolyn made these amazing, one-of-a-kind necklaces for our store, and just as in Europe, they have been an instant hit.
Have you tried a bacial? If not, go see Dana Huckaba at Mario Tricoci (900 N. Michigan Ave., 847-202-1900) for an amazing back facial. It was the highlight of Ikram’s winter—she had an instant back-lift.
