1 - Chicago Creation: Sea + Cane's Gourmet Caramels

The perfect end to a summertime wine party with friends is Sea + Cane’s aptly-named California cabernet sauvignon caramels ($20), one of the local candy company’s most popular salted caramels. Recently featured on The Today Show, the caramels pack a flavorful punch and come wrapped 20 to a box in unassuming brown kraft paper.

After a childhood full of underwhelming, mass-produced candies, sisters and Chicago natives Sally and Rebecca Saccomando took matters into their own hands. The result is Sea + Cane Sweets, a local candy company that serves up crave-worthy salty and sweet combinations in handcrafted, small-batch delicacies.

Though some of the company’s more unique treats are garnering attention lately—the “meat and cheese” gift set ($25) includes what looks like salami and blue cheese, but is actually a dark chocolate truffle and white chocolate truffle with blueberries—the original salted caramels are the undefeated best-sellers. There’s no storefront for Sea + Cane yet, but the caramels are sold on their website and at Sweet Cakes Bakery (901 N. Damen Ave., 773-772-5771). The Saccomando sisters also bring their treats to the occasional Dose Market at the River East Art Center (435 E. Illinois St., 312-321-1001).
