These 4 Distinct Scents Are Trending for Spring

Gone are the days of committing yourself to a single signature scent. Like your closet—filled with wardrobe basics, but transformed each season with on-trend pieces that ensure your personal style evolves with the times and isn’t stuck in the past—your fragrances should be a means of self-expression. Each one reflects a day’s particular mood. “Fragrance and fashion are historically linked,” says legendary perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. “I do believe that one should have a fragrance wardrobe, a mix of ageless classics and fashionable trends.” Kelly St. John, VP of beauty at Neiman Marcus, agrees: “A fragrance wardrobe is expected and encouraged, allowing our customers to select something that fits the day’s inspiration.” It’s only fitting, then, that the season’s four strongest fashion looks—lively, retro beachwear; sultry, romantic florals; bold, sleek power dressing; and chic athleisure with a vintage twist—pair so seamlessly with today’s boldest scents.

Fun in the Sun

Sunny beaches and succulent fruits came to mind when models wafted down the Spring 2017 runways in retro swim caps and lemon-printed frocks for Miu Miu and Altuzarra. And the latest fragrances are conjuring up the same optimistic outlook: Ralph Lauren’s new Summer Blossom, says master perfumer Harry Fremont, “provokes a moment of luminous happiness” with its notes of sparkling mandarin and guava, while Marc Jacobs’s Daisy Dream Kiss Edition is bursting with grapefruit and blackberry. Light is a focus of both Louis Vuitton’s Mille Feux, which blends raspberry and leather, and Sole di Positano, a sun-drenched citrus juice from Tom Ford. And Michael Kors’s Turquoise will transport you to the sea, thanks to a fleur de sel accord harvested from the cerulean waters off the French coast. Just don’t forget your beach towel…

Smell the Roses

From beauty counters to clothing racks, it’s all about the romantic bloom this season.

It is no coincidence that roses are cropping up left and right in fragrance. “Pink was a really big trend in ready-to-wear,” says Roopal Patel, fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, “so it’s interesting to see that rose as a fragrance was top of mind for a lot of [perfume] labels.” In honor of her parents’ love story, Tory Burch pairs rose with warm patchouli in Love Relentlessly, and Armani’s Sì Rose blends the bloom with sensual base notes like amber, reminiscent of the sultry sheaths seen on Dolce & Gabbana’s spring runway. For an edgier take on the flower, Dior’s Poison boasts bitter orange, and Ex Nihilo’s Devil Tender starts spicy with pink pepper berries. Aerin’s Garden Rose, with green notes of geranium blended with various roses, recalls the sheer, embroidered frocks at Alexander McQueen.

Well-Suited

From Boss and Salvatore Ferragamo to Tory Burch, power dressing via crisp and sleek suiting was all the rage on spring catwalks. Reinforcing the look of soft fabrications with strong silhouettes are fierce scents that finely balance both sides of the spectrum, such as the opulent, white florals and powerful sandalwood of Gucci Bamboo Limited Edition. Likewise, Good Girl from Carolina Herrera enjoys the irony of a bright jasmine and deep cocoa combo. Lalique’s Fleur Universelle 1900 is all-around intense with a fiery mix of cinnamon and cardamom, and Jo Malone London’s Bloomsbury Set honors Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, and their fellow English intellectuals with distinctive scents like Tobacco & Mandarin. Viktor & Rolf also pairs vastly different notes with iris and ink in Dirty Trick—a combination, says perfumer Marie Salamagne, that creates “a distinctive and extraordinary depth.”

Game, Set, Eau!

Athleisure has found its match in fresh, citrusy scents.

When sporting designs from Max Mara or Lacoste’s Spring 2017 vintage and tennis-inspired collections, up your game with clean fragrances that boast notes of energizing citrus. Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian blended lime and cool mint oils with mimosa blossoms to create Aqua Celestia for his eponymous collection. Inspired by the blues of the sky and sea, the scent “explores a new territory of freshness,” says Kurkdjian. Hermès’s Eau des Merveilles Bleue touches on the same theme but mixes sea spray with woody notes, and Elizabeth Arden’s White Tea blends a sea breeze accord with white tea extract. It’s all about Italian bergamot with Guerlain’s vibrant Bergamote Calabria, while perfumer Daniela Andrier also used citruses from Italy when creating Prada’s Candy L’eau, but added a tender floral accord with sweet vanilla for a fragrance that inspires wearers, she says, “to seek out life’s endless pleasures.”
