Chicago Sky player Swin Cash.
Swin Cash—Chicago Sky forward and Olympic gold medalist—released her first book earlier this year.

Earlier this year, Chicago Sky’s Swin Cash released her first-ever book, Humble Journey: More Precious than Gold ($17, amazon.com)—and we’re picking it up just as the WNBA’s 2013 season (and summer beach-reading season) kicks off. Cash’s is a classic sports story written with an honesty that can only come from having experienced the ups and downs of a physically and emotionally challenging career.

The main focus is her journey to the Olympics: after being passed up for the 2008 games, Cash made it to London last summer and clinched a gold medal. But, as the book relays, she brought home much more than gold in the invaluable lessons she learned along the way.

Cash—along with her former Sky teammate Ruth Riley, one of Michigan Avenue’s 2013 “Real Beauties”—is a rare breed of athlete. Both women count among their accolades an NCAA championship, WNBA championship, Olympic gold medal, and WNBA MVP awards. They also both give back to the community: Cash through her Cash For Kids foundation, which aims to motivate and educate children with a focus on fitness; charitable causes for Riley, who now plays for the Atlanta Dream, include No Kid Hungry and Nothing But Nets. A portion of the proceeds from Humble Journey will benefit Cash For Kids.

Plus, see an excerpt from the book right here:

Every time I touch the court I try to bring passion and intensity. It’s the only way I know how to play…I definitely believed we had a lot of potential and once we all were in sync we would be a force to be reckoned with. I’d embraced Chicago and was having a great time in the windy city…This was another season of my life and I know that it will play out well. It would be amazing to come together and win a Championship in Chicago. Anything is possible when everyone on a team buys in and we get all the pieces of the puzzle together.
