Apothecaries Modernize Centuries-Old Concept

Aaron's stocks hard-to-find European apothecary brands.
Since its opening during the blizzard of 2011, things have only gotten better for this modern-day apothecary—this year Aaron’s is nominated for the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award.
Go there for: Hard-to-find European apothecary brands, especially The Organic Pharmacy from London. The brand (which made its Chicago debut at Aaron’s last year) makes everything from daily vitamins and supplements, to sunless tanner and hair serums. Plus, with a licensed cosmetologist on staff, Aaron’s stocks specialty lines usually only available at medispas, such as GLO Minerals and GLO Therapeutics.
Coming Up: A bevy of new products will be added to Aaron’s inventory come the holiday season; we’re most excited for the addition of luxury line Rodin.
Extras: A host of curiosities: chic Jonathan Adler canisters (in lieu of the age-old apothecary jars), jewelry (think: good luck charms), and candles by the likes of Malin + Goetz and L’Artisan Parfumeur. 2338 N. Clark St., 773-360-8596
Modeled after a traditional European apothecary, this 135-year-old Chicago establishment still stocks some remedies in antique pharmacy jars—despite having a booming mail order and web-based business side.
Go there for: Herbal, holistic, and traditional remedies for total health and well-being; hundreds of products from around the world; and a multi-lingual staff fluent in a combined seven languages.
Coming Up: Always be on the lookout for new arrivals at Merz. A few new notables: Parker's ornate ox horn razor handle, Molton Brown of London's re-charge black pepper body wash, and Taylor of Old Bond Street's No. 74 Victorian lime cologne.
Extras: Merz stocks the city’s largest selection of natural and luxury soaps, from companies like Claus Porto (whose Favorite Red Poppy and Ilyria Honeysuckle were honored on Oprah’s “Favorite Things” list). 4716 N. Lincoln Ave., 773-989-0900; Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe St., 312-781-6900
Dubbed a “refined general store,” space519 stocks a constantly rotating and carefully curated inventory of apparel, accessories, home goods, and apothecary products.
Go there for: Something new every time—but rather than offer hundreds of brands and products, space519 handpicks only the best. Right now we’re loving HIPPxRGB nail foundations and tints, an eco-friendly line of nail products made to match specific skin tones, and the all-natural beauty oil by Rose-Marie Swift.
Coming Up: space519 is expanding its apothecary section this season, so look out for an even bigger selection. One fall addition of note: new nail colors from RGB.
Extras: While you’re there, browse ultra-cool rare clothing brands, Chicago-made products, and a veritable library of chic coffee table books like the Halston Anthology and Carine Roitfeld’s Irreverent. The 900 Shops, 900 N. Michigan Ave., 312-751-1519
