Bibhu Mohapatra Wows at the W City Center

Fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra showcased his latest collection at the W City Center on March 21 as part of the hotel brand’s Fashion Next program. The initiative highlights emerging designers and seeks to bring the latest in style to markets outside of just fashion-capital New York City. Mohapatra’s collection was inspired by an early 20th-century Chinese opera, and he successfully evoked the strength and passion of the characters through his clothing. Everything from structured, kimono-esque dresses to long, detailed ombre skirts to ultra-luxe furs graced Mohapata’s runway.
The journey to today’s eponymous line started by designing clothes for his sister. He solidified his style dreams at the Fashion Institute of Technology and through his work with design heavyweights like Halston and J. Mendel. From there, Mohapatra saw the high demand in designing custom couture for private clients in New York, parts of Europe, and India (his home country and the inspiration behind many of his vibrant textiles). He debuted his first full collection under Bibhu Mohapatra in early 2009 and with his latest line, we hope there are many more to come.
We caught the hilarious Bob Odenkirk behind the scenes during his Michigan Avenue photo shoot.
