Donna Karan’s latest collection is a tribute to her past: It marks the return of the bodysuit, although this version is much more wearable than its ’90s counterpart thanks to advancements in fabric technology.

“Fabric talks,” she explains. “It tells you what it wants to do.” For this season, that means the seven easy pieces that made her famous are crafted in luscious double-face silk and wool.

And while Karan still loves utilitarian black, she softens the look with ruffles. “The ruffled scarf is probably the most important item you can have,” she says, though she still believes in the power of a “drop-dead evening dress.”

A recent appearance at Chicago’s Neiman Marcus had her reflecting on the difference between women on Michigan Avenue and Fifth Avenue. “Chicago women are consciously pulled together,” she says. “I think Chicago has an elegance to it. It’s not as ‘street’ as New York. It’s more polished.” We agree. 737 N. Michigan Ave., 312-642-5900
