Summer Imbibing at Estate Ultra Bar

The ultimate spot for alfresco drinking this summer is Estate Ultra Bar, where guests can choose from the terrace overlooking the Chicago River, the sprawling rooftop StarDeck, or—though it hasn’t been unveiled just yet—the three-season gazebo. With summer in the air, we’re enjoying our cocktails on the 4,000-square-foot StarDeck while taking in music from a custom-made sound system and unbeatable views of the skyline and river.

Vibrant orange cushions make the deck furniture sizzle, but the bar’s array of cooling cocktails are truly refreshing. Debuting this weekend, the summer drinks menu features everything from flavored ice spheres to frozen beverages from a slushy machine. We’re especially intrigued by the Toucan Party cocktail, in which Three Olives’ Loopy vodka is poured over three ice spheres—one each of cranberry, orange juice, and Midori and pineapple. Sangria is always a great summer sipper, especially when mixed with bubbly as in Estate’s Sparkler Acai Sangria with VeeV Acai spirit, St. Germain, orange juice, Prosecco, and fresh fruit. And finally, the hottest days call for the coldest drinks, like the Cabana Colada, a frozen mix of 10 Cane Rum, pineapple juice, coconut water, and cream.

Dubbing itself a “social dining and drinking destination,” Estate’s food menu emphasizes sharing with dishes large enough to split. The dinner options and flatbreads are delicious, but for an evening on the roof, we opt for appetizers like the deviled eggs with house-smoked bacon, chive, crème fraiche, and Tabasco, or the lobster mac with a Goldfish-cracker crust. 1177 N. Elston Ave., 312-582-4777

While in BaselWorld, ATimelyPerspective.com posted on our Facebook page about the new Hublot LaFerrari watch—created to celebrate the partnership between Hublot and the sleek and stealth Ferrari brand. As those who love cars and watches know, the Ferrari brand has partnered with other watch brands before Hublot: Girard-Perregaux and Panerai are among them.

However, the relationship with Hublot may have been made with the idea in mind by both parties to create as something bold and uniquely different. The LaFerrari being the first example therein—created with input from both the car and watch sides. The question is, does it deliver what car and watch lovers want?

The new watch features a bold case shape that is designed to emulate the look of the stealth car. The materials used are high-tech, as is the technology. This watch holds a thus-far world record in the power reserve field. It offers a massive 50 days of power reserve—not 50 hours like many watches—50 days. Thus, one can wear this watch for just over a month and a half without having to wind it. The indication of power reserve is visible on a cylindrical readout.

The complex movement, which contains 637 pieces, includes 11 spring barrels lined up in the center of the watch and resembling a crank shaft; underscoring the automotive motif. With a full sapphire crystal, much of the movement is visible to the eye. Time (hour and minutes) is displayed on cylinders opposite the power reserve readout. The watch—which also houses a large 14.5mm flying tourbillon escapement—offers seconds on an aluminum cylinder attached to the tourbillon cage.

So, is the verdict in now? Is this what you expected from Hublot genius Jean-Claude Biver? Is this the new generation of Ferrari that everyone was waiting for? It should be noted that this world-first watch (remember 50 days of power reserve) created in a limited edition of 50 pieces retails for $345,000—certainly much less that the million-dollar car, but still a hefty figure.

Founder and editor-in-chief of ATimelyPerspective.com, Roberta Naas is a veteran award-winning journalist in the watch industry with more than 25 years of experience. She was the first woman watch editor in the US market—breaking in to an “all boys network” with a pioneering spirit that would be her signature to this day.

Stylist Jacqueline Rezak may reside out West now, but she still calls the Windy City home.

Jacqueline Rezak is a Chicago native—though there’s no one neighborhood in particular that she calls home. She grew up on the North Side and in Highland Park and then lived in Lincoln Park, Gold Coast, and River North while attending Columbia College.

Now, she resides and works in Los Angeles, where she is a stylist and owner of Rad & Refined, an e-boutique with appointment-only showrooms in LA and Chicago. Rezak will be back in town this summer to style some of the artists performing at Lollapalooza; she let us in on her musts while she’s here.

Do you have a go-to hotel for when you are in Chicago?
JACQUELINE REZAK: I love to stay at the Waldorf Astoria (11 E. Walton St., 312-646-1300)—I feel like I am in a fairy tale when I am there. Otherwise, The Drake Hotel (140 E. Walton St., 312-787-2200) will always have my heart for its stunning classic elegance.

What are some favorite spots of yours for dining?
JR: Whenever someone asks me what I miss the most about Chicago, there is no question that [it’s] the delicious food. My list of favorite restaurants could go on forever, but my top picks [are] Michael’s Red Hots (1879 2nd St., 847-432-3338), Gibsons (1028 N. Rush St., 312-266-8999), Rosebud (1500 W. Taylor St., 312-942-1117), Sunda (110 W. Illinois St., 312-644-0500), Greek Islands (200 S. Halsted St., 312-782-9855), RJ Grunts (2056 N. Lincoln Park West, 773-929-5363), and Wildfire (159 W. Erie St., 312-787-9000).

Besides Rad & Refined, do you do a lot of shopping when you’re in town?
JR: I love to shop in Chicago, especially in the summer when I can walk from shop to shop—[but] don’t get me wrong, this Chi Town girl has not lost her will to fight the snow and wind for some good shopping in the winter, too! I normally end up shopping by neighborhood when I [visit]: Armitage Avenue in Lincoln Park, Damen Avenue in Wicker Park, Walton Street in the Gold Coast, and Belmont Avenue for some really rad pieces. A few of my favorite spots are eDrop-Off (2117 N. Halsted St., 773-525-7467), Sarca (temporarily closed; online shopping only), and Lori’s Shoes (824 W. Armitage Ave., 773-281-5655). I never leave these stores disappointed.

Living in LA, you are in a major fashion hub. What stands out about Chicago’s style?
JR: I have kept a close eye on fashion in Chicago ever since I was studying at Columbia. I have been able to watch the fashion community grow into what it is today: new, exciting, and on point. A lot of influential designers, bloggers, business owners, models, hair stylists, makeup artists, photographers, and stylists have raised the bar for Chicago fashion.

What’s the biggest difference between LA and Chicago fashion?
JR: When it’s 60 degrees in LA, people will dress the way they would if it was 30 degrees in Chicago—it’s one of those things about growing up in the Windy City that stood out to me immediately.

Marilyn and Larry Fields.

Marilyn Fields and her husband, Larry, have a long history of attending the Art Basel shows. “We went to the first Art Basel Miami Beach, and that grabbed us,” recalls Marilyn. “We were like kids in a candy store. Collecting is just an addiction.” Devoted supporters of the Museum of Contemporary Art (where Larry is a trustee and Marilyn is on the Women’s Board), the Fieldses have a long history of collecting local artists’ work—think Theaster Gates, Nick Cave, William O’Brien, and Kerry James Marshall—all of it displayed in a private gallery adjacent to their chic Streeterville apartment. Here, Marilyn gives us her recommendations for the Switzerland fair this year.

At the show: Chicago galleries Richard Gray and Stephen Daiter participate in the Main section, but for Fields, Shane Campbell Gallery’s solo presentation of work by local artist Tony Lewis in the avant-garde Statement section is the event’s real Chicago highlight. “His work is very text-based and somewhat esoteric,” says Fields of Lewis, who graduated from the School of the Art Institute and whose work investigates political and aesthetic boundaries.

Institutions and exhibitions: Fields attests that the legendary Fondation Beyeler is a must-see for its special project produced by the inimitable Maurizio Cattelan. And after a three-year renovation, the Schlaulager reopens with the largest survey ever of work by British superstar Steve McQueen, co-organized by Chicago’s own Art Institute. Other highlights not to miss include the Kunsthalle Basel, Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Vitra Design Museum.

“The fair in Basel is very serious,” says Marilyn Fields, who, along with her husband, Larry, is one of the most respected contemporary art collectors in Chicago. “People who go are truly concerned with seeing the best art anywhere, under one roof.” Indeed, each year the apex of the international summer contemporary art marathon is Art Basel Switzerland. Now in its 44th year, the esteemed show distinguishes itself from the myriad other events with its unflinching curatorial rigor, consistently presenting the highest quality work and featuring a global, geographically diverse selection of galleries (representing a whopping 39 countries at this year’s June 13–16 run). The recent expansion into Hong Kong gives the Art Basel team an unparalleled three-continent, year-round engagement with the art world.

“Collectors from all parts of the globe travel to Art Basel’s show in Switzerland for a unique experience,” says Marc Spiegler, director of the shows. “The Swiss edition presents the strongest concentration of European galleries of any show, but also features the largest percentage of exhibitors from Asia and the Asia-Pacific in the history of Art Basel.” In addition to the main fair, the unique sectors, particularly Unlimited and Parcours, highlight characteristics specific to this fair. “The Unlimited sector shows museum-quality works that transcend the traditional art fair booth,” Spiegler says. Parcours (which literally means “distance covered” or “to rove”) presents site-specific works, performances, and installations sprinkled throughout the city of Basel. Energized by a new curator, Florence Derieux, Parcours will lead visitors this year through Klingental, one of the city’s most culturally diverse quarters, located along the right bank of the Rhine.

The unveiling of renowned Basel-based architects Herzog & de Meuron’s newly designed expansion of Hall 1 in the Messeplatz—where highly anticipated portions of the show such as Conversations and Salons will take place—is also of interest. Rumor has it that the traditional exhibition space has been transformed into a three-story, ultramodern building flooded with natural light.

But every insider knows that the true secret to Art Basel’s appeal is the city’s long list of world-class private collections, foundations, and museums. “The art show is complemented by extraordinary exhibitions presented by local institutions,” Spiegler notes. Sure to be at the top of every visitor’s list is the major retrospective by Max Ernst, paired with a show of work by Italian prankster Maurizio Cattelan, at the storied Fondation Beyeler. (The museum houses the stellar collection of dealer Ernst Beyeler and his wife, Hildy; Beyeler also happened to cofound the Art Basel show in 1970 and, though deceased, remains a beloved figure in the art world.) The sentimental favorite will likely be the presentation of Pablo Picasso’s work at the Kunstmuseum, featuring special pieces from many local collections.

The Art Basel team prepares to welcome its 65,000-plus guests to Switzerland on the heels of hosting the first Art Basel in Hong Kong just a few weeks earlier. “In this first edition we had 245 of the world’s leading galleries, 48 of which had never before exhibited in any Hong Kong art fair,” says Spiegler. “We successfully brought new faces, new artists, and new ideas to the region in addition to having built strong relationships with the local art scene. It’s a ton of work, but totally exciting for us and for many of our friends in the art world.” For Fields, the greatest thrill is discovering the emerging stars of tomorrow. “The most exciting aspect of the art world now is the young, talented artists popping up on the scene,” she says. “There is a lot of great creativity being unleashed.”

'Plant Green Ideas' Sprouts Up in Chicago

Plant Green Ideas’ sculptural heads will sprout foliage hairdos and share green ideas on the Cultural Mile this summer.

The not-for-profit organization Plant Green Ideas—in partnership with the Chicago Cultural Mile Association—is getting ready to unveil an eponymous, eco-friendly art installation soon. The open-air exhibit will take over a multi-block stretch from Randolph Street to Roosevelt Road with a series of enormous sculptural heads sprouting foliage “hairdos.”

A sort of larger-than-life Chia pet, each head stands six-and-a-half feet tall and weighs more than a ton. The sculptures were crafted locally and sustainably at SVI Themed Construction Solutions, using recycled concrete product. But the installation is much more than just public art. For PGI co-founders Pamella Capitanini and Robin Malpass, it is a vision—and mission—realized.

Intended to support the city’s Sustainable Chicago 2015 initiative, each planter gives passers-by a “green” idea. Actions as simple as “choose to walk,” “fix water leaks,” and “insulate the home,” will encourage viewers toward a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Interactive QR codes will give even more information for those intrigued by specific green ideas.

Of course, the planters themselves contribute to a more sustainable environment as well. They will help reduce the urban heat island effect throughout the summer, and retain storm water—all part of making Chicago a leader in sustainable innovation.

“Plant Green Ideas” will be on display through August 31.

Poag Mahone’s ‘Northside’ variation is a grassfed cheeseburger with a hot dog, sweet relish, mustard, sport peppers, lettuce, tomato, and celery salt on a pretzel roll.

On May 27, the Cubs and the White Sox face off for the season’s first Crosstown Classic series, but the rivalry is about more than just baseball. The true Northside/Southside battle is over food, and throughout the month of May, Loop restaurant Poag Mahone’s attempts to settle the debate with two burgers playing to the tastes of each neighborhood. The best part: a portion of the proceeds from the Chicago sandwiches goes to two local charities.

For Cubs concession fans, the Northside Cure for the Curse Burger features a 100% grassfed cheeseburger and a hotdog. It’s piled high Chicago style, with sweet relish, yellow mustard, sport peppers, lettuce, tomato, and celery salt between a pretzel bun. A dill pickle spear and side of nachos accompany the stacked sandwich. In support of recently retired Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood, some of the Northside burger’s proceeds will be put toward the Wood Family Foundation. Southsiders, on the other hand, will want to sample the Put it on the Board Burger, a cheese-stuffed grassfed burger with Polish sausage, beer onions, and spicy brown mustard. It benefits the Bring Me Home Children’s Home and Aid Foundation.

No matter where their loyalty lies, though, Chicagoans can always agree that beer is the best accompaniment to a hearty burger (and hot dog). Poag Mahone’s offers an expansive selection of seasonally rotating craft ales, and right now we love the locally brewed 5 Rabbit American Blonde golden ale. 333 S. Wells St., 312-566-9100

At only 22, designer Shelby Steiner is breaking into the local fashion scene. This month, she launched her eponymous label’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection in-store at West Town boutique Dovetail.

Steiner cites her Midwest upbringing and eclectic family as major influences to her overall design style, but the latest collection has an additional influence. The dark aesthetic is a result of Steiner’s anger about the rhino-poaching problem in South Africa. As somber as the inspiration may be, though, the pieces are ultra-chic. Steiner’s Green Inverse Top ($132) is a standout with its unique pattern, while the Black Coated Cotton Crop Top ($128) is perfect for summer when paired with a high-waisted maxi skirt and lots of jewelry. Other items include canvas circle skirts and handmade leather bracelets.

The best part? You can feel good about wearing Steiner’s clothes, since she uses ethical best practices to make sustainable pieces. In fact, most everything you’ll find at Dovetail is considerate of the environment and its inhabitants. “I’m very excited to have my line carried at Dovetail alongside numerous other talented Chicago designers’,” Steiner says. “Each of us is creating a high-quality product made ethically, while creating a supportive community within the fashion industry.”

Though this is the first time Shelby Steiner pieces are available in a store, the designer first launched her collection late last year at the Chicago Fashion Focus runway show. She is currently one of six designers-in-residence at the Macy’s Fashion Incubator. 1452 W.

The renovated roofdeck on the Odyssey yacht offers unbeatable skyline views.

This season, Chicago’s summertime tradition of taking a skyline cruise on Lake Michigan gets even better with Navy Pier’s largest yacht, the Odyssey, boasting $2 million renovations. A top-to-bottom remodel, the upgrades include technology—flat-screen TVs, hi-def sound systems—chic modernized décor, and an ultra-luxe roof deck.

Each of the ship’s lower decks is climate-controlled and spacious, but the real coup is the upper observation deck, which boasts breathtaking views of the skyline to one side and lake to the other. The deck has been outfitted with modern leather seating, plush pillows, high and low tables, and pretty planters that make you forget you’re on a moving ship. Indoors, the two lower levels feature three bars and dance floors lit from below with starry lighting.

Even the kitchen got a revamp: Eric LeVine, the winner of Food Network’s Chopped, collaborated with Odyssey executive chef Leonel Martinez to put together elevated menus offered on board. Our pick is the Champagne Dinner cruise, which begins with a chef’s tasting of cauliflower puree, tapenade, crudite snap vegetables, and a glass of Champagne. All menus feature locally-sourced produce and ingredients, and every meal ends with selections from the desserts table. Though the ship is available for large events, we think it makes the perfect romantic dinner for two on a midsummer night. Reservations are $60 and up and can be made at odysseycruises.com or by calling 888-957-2320. Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave., 866-305-2469

Gatsby fever continues: apparently Fitzgerald was inspired by Ginerva King, a Chicagoan, for his character of Daisy Buchanan (in the book, Buchanan settles on Long Island after living in Chicago for some time).
Brunch Plans: Gather

For summer Sundays, Gather features an outdoor terrace.

Lincoln Square restaurant Gather recently added brunch to its menu, putting its signature European-American spin on some a.m. classics. With chef Ken Carter—a Charlie Trotter alum—behind the burners, the Sunday meal (10 am-2 pm) is sure to be a hit.

Opened just last December, Gather has already garnered a few dinner menu favorites, which fans of the resto won’t be deprived of at brunch. Namely, the uovo raviolo—a dish that has morning meal influences to begin with—combines egg, ricotta, sweet jalapeno, pancetta, and white truffle butter. The other import from Gather’s dinner menu is its unique burger, loaded with white cheddar, smoked bacon, caramelized onion, and roasted red pepper aioli.

The menu is far from just afternoon-focused fare, though. Delicious new additions include the brioche bread bowl with poached egg, pork sausage, asparagus, mushroom, and mornay, served with home fries. The pastrami hash is also appealing, with a fried egg, bell pepper, and onion; or go classic with an order of flapjacks. But whatever you pick for your main, we suggest starting with the Gathering Board: it features charcuterie, cheese, honeycomb, roasted almonds, berry jam, apple mustard, and pickled vegetables.

The cocktail offerings are traditional, and the Bloody Mary is worth it for the chorizo-stuffed olive alone. One fruity addition is the aptly named Strawberry Fields, a cocktail comprised of strawberry, basil, and rum. 4539 N. Lincoln Ave., Lincoln Square, 773-506-9300

Kate and Laura Mulleavy at SAIC’s The Walk afterparty. The Rodarte designers accepted the Legend of Fashion award at the event on May 3, 2013.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago presented its year-end fashion show, The Walk on May 3, 2013, and honored Rodarte design duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy with the annual “Legend of Fashion” award. The Mulleavy sisters—who are just slightly more than a year apart and finish each other’s sentences with ease—were in Chicago for the show and a quick chat with Michigan Avenue at The Café at Ikram.

In Chicago, Rodarte is available exclusively at Ikram. Why did you choose this store?
KATE MULLEAVY: We started [here with] our first collection. Ikram [Goldman] saw us and saw something about us, and has been a tremendous supporter and mentor. She’s one of the reasons that we’ve been able to do what we do. When you have someone that believes in your vision and cultivates a client and understands it—that’s the thing that is so special about her store, and I think kind of the world that she creates. There’s no store like this in the world, so for me this is the place to be [in Chicago].
LAURA MULLEAVY: [Ikram] will see new talent; she’ll see any young designer. She has that part of her that wants to support and discover and be a part of things when they start young and grow into something. That’s a better story too, I think, for the clients. You come here and you feel like you’ll have a connection forever.

What is it like working together as siblings?
LM: We argue like any siblings would—and I’m sure like any design partner would—but our arguments are over silly things. It’s not because we have a disagreement about a color or [our vision], it’s more like, ‘you’re really bugging me today.’
KM: We’re pretty intertwined as a design team. We were always very close as kids; we kind of lived in our own world. Where we grew up it was a very romantic landscape. We were always outside, creating these imaginary worlds, and that [has] carried through. The thing about Laura and I is that we we’re really okay living inside our own heads. Some people aren’t, some people need to get out and see everything. I think we live in a world that we create together—and because we’re siblings there’s a language. She’ll say something to me and I just get it. I get it.
LM: [We] don’t even really have to have a full conversation.

Over the years—and even season to season—your line has shown a lot of variety and is always very artistic. How do your clothes work for Chicago women?
KM: This is such an artistic city.
LM: It’s so culturally-based—food, architecture, art—and that’s the center point of the city, kind of the talking point, which it isn’t in every other city.
KM: Chicago is a key place for us because of that. Artistically, what we do really translates. This is the general rule I have with my clothes: there isn’t a specific woman [I design for]; in fact I’m constantly amazed by how varied it is. Because of how culturally evolved and how experimental a city it is, I think there’s a place for our clothes and for people that want to engage in that. It just really works here. Ikram really picks—and this is a testament to her and the clients she has—that she picks, I always think, some of the most directional and more important pieces that we do, and there’s a home for them here. They don’t go to every city in the world, they just don’t. I think it says a lot about the city and the women [here]: they definitely are…
LM: high thinkers…
KM: individual, directional. It’s really cool.

Rodarte’s latest collection is available at Ikram. 15 E. Huron St., 312-587-1000

Cityscape Bar's New Cocktails

From the 15th floor, Cityscape Bar offers gorgeous views of the Chicago River.

With its sprawling views of the city and river, and perfect business district location, Cityscape Bar is already a happy hour hotspot. This season, we have one more reason to head there after work: the bar’s brand-new beverage program features expanded beer and wine lists, as well as a host of new cocktails.

The new menu is a must for martini lovers, offering nine variations on the classic cocktail. Our favorite for summertime is the refreshing Saint Basil, featuring Absolut Mandarin vodka, St. Germain, lime juice, bar syrup, and fresh basil. Similarly seasonal is the Sparkling Spring martini, comprised of citrus vodka, raspberry puree, bar syrup, and Mionetto Prosecco float. A few others are perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. For example, the upgraded chocolate martini Le Chocolat combines Absolut Vanilla, organic chocolate liqueur, Bailey’s, Frangelico, and cream.

In addition to the martinis, a number of specialty cocktails have been added to the list. We’re intrigued by the Blueberry Collins, which mixes gin, pomegranate juice, blueberry syrup, lemon juice, and citrus soda. The Margarita Perfecto de Patron combines two types of the top-shelf tequila—Anejo and Citronage—along with sour mix and fresh lime juice.

Complement your cocktails with a couple of appetizers. Share a sausage fennel pizza with friends, or try a trio of sliders—we suggest the barbecue pulled pork sliders with Asian coleslaw—accompanied by Parmigiano-Reggiano and truffle oil shoestring fries. 350 W. Mart Center Dr., 15th Fl., 312-836-5000

Now in its fourth season, Tome embodies an effortless style with utilitarian garments as pragmatic as they are unique. “We’ve always had a clear idea of what we wanted to do,” explains Martin. “We wanted to make unfettered, straightforward clothing that has a sense of humility to it.”

Initially an NYC exclusive, the designers’ tailored separates and updated basics arrive in the Windy City with select pieces from the new Spring collection available exclusively at Space519. Inspired by the works of female artists Pina Bausch, Louise Bourgeois, and Vanessa Beecroft, the lineup includes languid silk sheath dresses, sculptural twill tops, and relaxed, pleated trousers.

A kimono-style vest cast in gold metallic adds unexpected intrigue to this season’s popular black and white ensembles, while a pale nude, V-neck maxi dress exudes a discreetly seductive sophistication. The collection’s delicate, embroidered boat-neck top proves the ultimate expression of femininity, with its shimmering surface casting a natural glow on its wearer. Space519, The 900 Shops, 312-751-1519

Wicker Park has long been known as a bohemian mecca sprawling with students, artists, and comparatively affordable housing. But over the past dozen years, the neighborhood has embraced luxury, from trendy boutiques like Marc by Marc Jacobs and Nanette Lepore to high-end food and drink destinations like Schwa and Storefront Company. So when luxury home builder Noah Properties started building in Chicago in ’05, Wicker Park and the nearby neighborhoods of Bucktown and West Town were their first targets.

Founded by Anita Lisek and her husband, Bart, in 2001, Noah Properties got its start with condo conversions and single-family home rehabs, but it was the company’s foray into building custom homes in 2005 that helped business take off. With Lisek spearheading interior design and decoration and her husband managing construction and engineering, the duo has built such a successful business that its homes routinely sell before construction is completed, or very soon after. Take 1524 North Wood Street, which sold for $1.275 million in January, fast on the heels of its December completion. The five-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom home is on a smaller lot (standard for Wicker Park), but features stunning light fixtures, eye-catching tiles, textured walls, and high-end appliances. The residence also includes luxury amenities that have become signatures for Noah Properties: a built-in espresso machine, home theater, closet-sized temperature-controlled wine storage unit, and rooftop deck with gas, water, and electricity hookups for outdoor entertaining.

“We do so well with our spec homes that we usually don’t have a lot of requests for custom design,” Lisek says. “In the beginning, we did four or five homes custom based on what the buyers wanted. But just about all the buyers agreed with the details we had already [chosen], so we decided to build spec houses.” If a buyer requests a custom design, says Lisek, she and her husband will change options accordingly. And though Noah Properties’ houses typically are not custom-built by the buyer from the ground up, the husband and wife duo discuss every detail of the architect’s plans with the buyer. The goal is the same for each residence: to design and create a home with nothing but the best fixtures and amenities.

“We want to use every inch of the house—no negative space,” Lisek says. “And what we choose to put in the house—the tiles, millwork, and fixtures—reflects our company.” To that end, Lisek consistently uses beloved brands like Jonathan Adler and Robert Abbey and tiles imported from Italy, Spain, and Japan.

Only within the past few years has Noah Properties started to build in other neighborhoods more known for luxury homes: Lincoln Park and Lakeview. Lisek is particularly excited about 1250 West Schubert Avenue because she could easily imagine calling this residence home. “1250 Schubert has a totally different, very modern, LA feel because it’s all glass,” says Lisek. “I put so much thought into the fixtures, walls, and details. The little design details are like jewelry to me.”

Back in Wicker Park, Lisek believes the demand for luxury custom homes in the neighborhood will grow even further, especially with rising lot prices. And she still gets excited to build there, enthusiastically describing a boutique condo building the business is obtaining permits for at Damen and Shakespeare. The three-unit building will have retail space on the ground level and 3,200-squarefoot units with high ceilings, lots of light, and plenty of luxury amenities. Anita’s heart is very much in this project, too, which will hopefully break ground in the fall.

“We’re supposed to move our office into one of the lower (retail) levels, so I told my husband I’d like to keep a condo for ourselves,” she says. “But we’ll see if that happens.”

Tondo by Night, de Grisogono ($9,400–$17,500).

As glamour-loving women know, not every timepiece is serious and conservative. Some are downright whimsical, such as the hit Tondo by Night watches from de Grisogono. Unveiled last year, the collection has just begun to make its way into luxury jewelry stores in the last few months. In addition to being mechanical works of art, these timepieces possess an unusual quality in the luxury watch world that begs them to be worn.

Designed by Fawaz Gruosi, the founder and president of de Grisogono, the Tondo by Night is intended to be a capricious, playful timepiece that stores light during the day and then frees it after the sun goes down. The case is created from a pearly photoluminescent fiberglass composite—with pieces of mother-of-pearl blended into the fiberglass for extra shimmer—then further bedecked with color-coordinated gemstones.

“It has such wide appeal because it is fashionable, hefty, and different from everything else on the market,” Gruosi says. “Still, I never dreamed Tondo by Night would be such an amazing success. The demand is much higher than what I produced, which was extremely unexpected.”

Each Tondo by Night watch is equipped with an exclusive in-house mechanical movement, specially developed to display the gem-set oscillating weight on the front side. Built in collaboration with an outside lab, the Tondo by Night timepieces are offered in an array of colors, each with a row of 48 gemstones on the bezel, plus another 60 on the dial (and a black diamond on the crown). The colors include white with white diamonds, yellow with yellow sapphires, pink with pink sapphires, green with tsavorites, purple with amethysts, and orange with orange sapphires. And three new shades were unveiled at the Baselworld show in April: a vivid green case with a tourmaline bezel, a blue case with a blue sapphire bezel, and a coral case with a spinel bezel. The most expensive watch in the collection is currently the white (diamond) version, which retails for $17,500.

“I dedicate this watch to happy summer days and glamorous nightlife,” Gruosi says. “It’s not only a luxury timepiece but also can be worn as a magnificent jewelry piece, with a twist.”

This year marks the 160th anniversary of Swiss watch brand, Tissot. To honor the milestone, the brand has been very busy, and this year unveils multiple new movements and a host of really cool new timepieces that move it to the next level of sophistication.

Among the new pieces is the Powermatic 80—an automatic watch with 80 hours of power reserve. The watch was made possible thanks to the revolutionary new caliber, the Powermatic 80 movement. To achieve this technical prowess, Tissot strongly reduces the consumption of energy of the watch. The oscillation frequency of the Powermatic 80 is therefore brought down from 4 to 3 Hz. A high-performance synthetic material is used in the construction of the escapement to reduce friction. Thanks to a reduction of the diameter of the barrel-arbor’s core, the mainspring is stretched, thereby increasing the power reserve even further. Finally, the precision is increased with a new and innovative balance.

Making the watch even better is the fact that it is a COSC-certified chronometer. It is available in two sizes appropriate for men and women—33mm and 41mm—and is crafted in steel, steel, and gold-plated, and in versions with diamond adornments. The watch, which looks great and offers superb craftsmanship and precision, retails for a wow price of $1,075 to $1,575 depending on the model.

Naas brings responsible, factual—yet always timely and insightful—reporting of the watch industry to the forefront.

Chicago Creation: Modern Sprout Planter

With a successful Kickstarter campaign that closed today, Chicagoans Nick Behr and Sarah Burrows have launched Modern Sprout, a self-sustaining window planter box perfect for urban living.

Behr and Burrows came up with Modern Sprout out of pure necessity. Trying to grow their own herbs for cooking, and flowers for décor, had become time consuming and messy. The hydroponic system used in the resulting planters ($65-$169) does not require soil, and waters itself with the help of a timer and air pump to push the water from an inner reservoir to the plants. Set up is easy, and you'll simply need to plug your planter in near a sunny window, then refill your reservoir with water and organic liquid fertilizer every two-four weeks. A solar option is also available.

Each window box has space for three different plants with the ability to grow everything from herbs like basil, thyme, and rosemary, to flowers like gardenia, lavender, and orchids. Devoted home cooks can even grow tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, and other fruits and vegetables.

Unlike other indoor gardening options, though, Modern Sprout planters blend seamlessly into almost any décor. They are available in four different finishes: while the reclaimed wood planter, which is crafted in partnership with Chicago-based RxMade, is a close second, the chalkboard planter is our top pick. Record the name of each plant, or use the board to display the menu of a dinner party—especially one that incorporates your homegrown herbs.

Stars are aligning in the Chicago wine world, as two high-profile local restaurants have recently brought on emerging new talents. After launching his career in New York, Steven Morgan (Del Posto, Tribeca Grill) has returned to Chicago as wine maestro at Alinea; meanwhile, Jason Wagner of Nellcôte and RM Champagne Salon has taken his sparkling personality to Henri and The Gage as wine director and sommelier. Michigan Avenue recently caught up with the wine wunderkinds.

How are Chicago wine drinkers unique?
STEVEN MORGAN: Chicago has always been very open in food and wine [but with] a high appreciation for the classics. There’s a large proportion of love for big, rich California wines, smaller-production Champagnes, and indigenous varietals from different regions, like dry wines from Tokaj, Hungary—extremes on both ends.
JASON WAGNER: People are more adventurous than restaurant owners give them credit for. At RM, there are no brand names on that Champagne list, but I got no push-back from people willing to go out of their comfort zones.

What is your philosophy as you step into your new role?
SM: My approach has always been the same, [but at Alinea] it’s really important to learn how different additives work with flavor pairings. It’s important to have communication between the sommelier and kitchen staff to choose something that matches the playfulness and seriousness of the menu.
JW: It’s slightly different for each, but both programs focus on organic, sustainable, biodynamic, and natural wines—more at Henri, where the list is all organic and biodynamic. At The Gage, I’m bringing on a few labels of natural wine with the idea that wine should be treated more like a grocery than a luxury. You don’t need to put on a tie to drink wine. Especially in the Midwest, wine has this air about it that it’s something special—and it is, but it can just be something delicious to drink with a burger.

	Any big changes ahead?
SM: Until I’m completely accustomed to everything that goes on in the kitchen, my job is to keep my head down and become enmeshed in it. The last thing I ever want to do is enter a place—especially one I’m so humbled to be a part of—and act like I’m some new kid on the block.
JW: At The Gage, there’s going to be a larger number of biodynamic and natural wines, and a lot less oak. At Henri, wine will be listed with the appellation first rather than the winemaker, because especially with biodynamics, we’re highlighting the terroir, and that should be the first thing that you see. The by-the-glass program at Henri is going to be very dynamic, changing every few weeks to reflect the menu and season.

What’s the first bottle of wine you fell in love with?
SM: Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino. I was swayed by the environment because I was in Italy and went [to the winery] for lunch. It was spectacular.
JW: Krug nonvintage was one of the first big “wow” moments. It was super complex.

What are you excited about drinking this season?
SM: I’ll be drinking crisp whites—Rieslings, like Prager. I’m an acid freak.
JW: I crush rosé. I like classic provincial-style rosés: light, herbal, and refreshing.

Since launching her label just last year, local designer Azeeza Khan has garnered a major following. So, it only made sense that the next step for her burgeoning business was a brick-and-mortar shop. Opened late last month, Atelier Azza offers both ready-to-wear and bespoke designs in The Shops at North Bridge.

The new store’s interior is a mod mix of black, white, and Lucite, accented with refurbished vintage pieces and gilded finishes. This blank canvas is perfect for showcasing Khan’s creative designs: the intricately hand-beaded dresses, collars, belts, and blazers create a veritable rainbow of color along the walls. Khan displays her ready-to-wear pieces (starting at $150) on the left side of the shop—our current RTW must-have is the scarf, embellished with a weighty, semi-precious turquoise stone border and fringe ($395).

On the other side of the space, shoppers will find Khan most in her element in the custom designs section among sample swatches, a sewing machine, and measuring tape. Here, racks are hung higher on the wall to accommodate the newest addition to Azza’s atelier: frothy couture bridal gowns. A large desk provides a space for Khan to meet with brides—or anyone looking for a custom gown, which generally takes four-six weeks to produce—and get an idea of a client’s wants, needs, and personality. Khan says she is still putting the finishing touches on her store, but has big plans for the future. In addition to the creation of her bridal line, she’ll be adding an in-store tea service in the coming months. 520 N. Michigan Ave., 312-327-2300

American Junkie's lobster bisque is served with lobster, sherry, and puff pastry.

New River North restaurant/bar American Junkie comes just in time for summer: with its retractable roof and wall of open-air windows, the hotspot puts an indoor twist on alfresco dining. This month, American Junkie adds to its appeal by introducing a contemporary-American lunch service.

Overall, the menu offers a balance of lighter fare and more substantial items from chef Kendal Duque. If you’re after something simpler, try the citrus seafood salad with avocado, crab, shrimp, lobster, and oyster cream. Served with lobster, puff pastry, and sherry, the lobster bisque hits the spot for a satisfying lunch dish. On the more filling side of things, the bison burger is done up with smoked mushrooms, tomato jam, and bleu cheese, and the Frieda burger is big enough to share, with two Pat LaFrieda patties, bacon, onions, cheddar, and sweet pickles. Even the appetizers and sides are intriguing: start off with bacon-wrapped dates with goat cheese and red pepper sauce, or supplement your main selection with housemade potato chips.

For a lunch out during the workweek, American Junkie offers an impressive list of beer and wine, but for after work or weekends, the cocktails are a must. The Sunset Blvd. comes creatively mixed with cucumber vodka, St. Germain, lime, and Prosecco. Or, sip something stronger with the aptly named Knock Out, comprised of Maker’s Mark, sweet vermouth, and Aperol. Lunch is offered seven days a week from 11 am-4 pm. 15 W. Illinois St., 312-239-0995

It’s 6:30 on a Thursday evening and every table at Little Goat—as well as all the stools at the counter facing the bustling open kitchen—is full. About 20 people linger across from the host podium beneath a rounded tufted leather wall surrounding the revolving-door entrance. Through the dining room and into Little Goat Bread (which at night may as well be called Little Goat Bar), about 40 more people happily quaff pints of craft beer and bourbon cocktails. Everyone waits to get a seat at Stephanie Izard’s new spot. The same scene plays out directly across the street at Izard’s original restaurant, Girl & the Goat. So if you thought the new kid on the block would steal thunder away from her older sib, you’d be wrong. And either way, you’d still be waiting.

Little Goat was meant to be just that. When Izard and her partners, Kevin Boehm and Rob Katz, discussed the follow-up to Girl & the Goat (affectionately known by the team as the “big goat”), they envisioned “a bakery to do breakfast, maybe lunch,” says Izard. But then the shuttered Red Light space became available at 820 West Randolph Street, offering a more sizable opportunity. “We saw the space and thought, We could do the diner and the bakery,” she admits. “Now I love all the different parts. It’s like a whole Little Goat village.” So the plan evolved, growing to include Little Goat Bread (or Bar), along with a modern, light-drenched second-level kitchen with an outdoor roof deck for private events and classes. Now the place serves dinner, too. And despite all the space—the dining room holds 120 with room for roughly 65 more upstairs—the people still wait.

Good things come to those who stick around—lots of things, actually. The menu is stuffed with more than 75 items that hit every category from morning to late night. “There’s something for everyone,” Izard boasts. “You can come here five nights a week and get something different each time.” So whether you pop in at 7 am before work (or battle the throngs for weekend brunch) for a stack of traditional sourdough pancakes or the not-so-traditional Kimchee & Bacon & Eggs & Pancakes Asian Style Breakfast Tasty Thing (don’t ask, just order it); at midday to nosh on a Slagel Family Farm all-American beef burger (a classic patty piled with all the toppings and Little Goat’s special sauce); or at dinner for the succulent Sloppy Goat (like Mom’s specialty but better, served on a buttery brioche and topped with tangy slaw), the Boo Boo Baise (a rich and hearty seafood stew), or even all-day breakfast—you’re going to eat. And you won’t mind that you waited.

Running Little Goat is no small undertaking. Izard employs more than 175 people with waitresses in country kitchen-like purple shirtdresses, hipster servers with tats and facial hair, a team of managers making sure everything runs like clockwork, and around 75 cooks who man the line from early morning to late night. Ask anyone and they’ll say that Izard is the one working the hardest while at the same time supporting her team and creating a positive vibe in the kitchen. “She could jump into any station and do a better job than you,” admits Sean Spradlin, executive sous chef at Wicker Park’s Carriage House, who cooked alongside Izard at Girl & the Goat. “She can help you without screaming or yelling at you. It’s nice to have that kind of chef personality in the kitchen.” That cheerful-yet-competitive attitude seems to pervade everything Izard does, and it’s likely a factor in her success. Whether it’s working the line at either restaurant, lending a hand at events for charities like Common Threads and Share Our Strength, or making a return appearance on Top Chef, everything Izard touches seems to turn to gold.

“She’s so charismatic, and that carries over into everything she does,” says Joe Flamm, a former Girl & the Goat sous chef who now holds that position down Randolph Street with Bill Kim at BellyQ. “The people around her have that energy. Her restaurants have that energy. I can’t explain how or why that works, but it’s unbelievable and undeniable. That carries into the food and makes you like her. She kills it.” 820 W. Randolph St., 312-888-3455

Meyer lemon panna cotta is bright with springtime flavors.

“I was always the youngest in my class,” says Jean Banchet Rising Pastry Chef award winner Leigh Omilinsky, who discovered a love of pastry as a high school student when, inspired by her foodie parents, she began taking culinary classes at Kendall College.

The 28-year-old executive pastry chef of the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower (who has crafted confections for Café des Architectes and Le Bar since 2010) is embracing the season with a menu of produce-driven desserts. Whether it’s caramelized white chocolate with sour cherries; strawberries and crème fraîche; or a “hot pink” rhubarb sorbet (which, the chef notes, “is not kidding around”), Omilinsky remains steadfast in sourcing only the freshest ingredients. “I love my farmers. I want to use local, seasonal ingredients as much as possible, and when that happens, I’m happy,” Omilinsky says, adding, “I’m usually happy.” 20 E. Hockney-esque hues in Salvatore Ferragamo’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

Here’s some great news for spring: Salvatore Ferragamo has revamped its Michigan Avenue boutique, bringing an expanded assortment of high-end offerings to its loyal Chicago clientele. “The Chicago customer understands and appreciates the qualities that define the Ferragamo House,” says Vincent Ottomanelli, president of the Italian luxury brand. “It is all about luxury, style, tradition, and innovation.” Outfitted in mirror-polished stainless steel, warm walnut tones, and etched glass, the newly renovated (and now bi-level) store features 3,000 square feet of selling space to showcase everything from eyewear and small leather goods to handbags, shoes, and fragrances.

Customers wishing to step out in the latest fashions can also browse the women’s and men’s Spring/Summer 2013 ready-to-wear collections. Designed by Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti, this season’s offerings call to mind the Art Institute of Chicago’s current exhibition on Roman treasures with white-hot gladiator boots and short wrapped skirts. Men can embrace the bold energy of summer, splashing out in cotton blazers and carrot-cut trousers in Hockney-like shades of spearmint, limoncello, and pink pepper. For gentlemen who would rather forgo the casual look of the latest collection, the store’s Sumisura program offers an impeccable collection of made-to-measure suiting and tailored garments. 645 N.

More than 1.5 million people rode the world’s first Ferris wheel at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago.

The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition saw some exciting firsts: The public was introduced to Cracker Jack, Juicy Fruit chewing gum, and an early prototype of the zipper at the 600-acre fair in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side.

But it was the debut of the Ferris wheel that proved most enchanting. Created for the so-called “White City,” the 264-foot-high circular marvel towered above the nearly 200 neoclassical buildings. When creator George W. Ferris blew a golden whistle on June 21, 1893, to mark the structure’s inaugural turn, the effect was breathtaking: a gracefully spinning spectacle of 952 tons of steel. The invention was immediately hailed as a triumph of engineering, and during the exhibition more than 1.5 million riders would enter its cars to view Lake Michigan and Chicago in all their splendor. The added novelty of 3,000 electric lights on the wheel made the sights even more dazzling.

Although many had initially expressed doubts about the revolving wheel, deeming Ferris “the man with wheels in his head,” the determined inventor transformed his vision into a reality that continues to captivate, turn after turn.

Jessica Alba hosted The Ultimate Baby Shower for Chicagoan Casey Arendt at Land of Nod (900 W. North Ave., 312-475-9903) this week.

This week, Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company—an online source for safe, eco-friendly baby products—teamed up with Land of Nod and Tea Collection to give one local deserving mom the ultimate baby shower. The actress and mother to daughters Honor and Haven was in town for the shower event celebrating Chicagoan Casey Arendt, who is expecting twins in early fall.

Happy Mother’s Day! How are you celebrating?
JESSICA ALBA: I’m going to spend it with my mom and my kids. When the kids are napping, my mom and I will get a mani/pedi, [and] we usually have brunch in the morning.

You started The Honest Company after becoming a mother yourself. What was the motivation to start this company?
JA: I really created [The Honest Company] because I needed this company to exist for myself and for other families. There wasn’t one company out there that I could trust that made high-quality products—that were, obviously, non-toxic—and affordable. [There are] products that tout themselves as being the healthy option or the eco option because there’s a green leaf on [them], or the packaging is brown. I would then find out that what was inside was just as toxic as what is in any conventional product; it’s the packaging that makes it eco-friendly. But I want what’s touching my baby—and what’s touching my own dishes and laundry and everything—to be healthy.

Through The Ultimate Baby Shower contest, The Honest Company gives a deserving mom tons of things she needs for a new baby. What inspired you to do this?
JA: I came up with the idea when I was pregnant. [At a baby shower] you get so many things that are cute, but your kids grow so fast. At the end of the day, you really need diapers and wipes, and household cleaning products! If I would have gotten that as a gift I would have been so grateful. We wanted to throw showers for mothers that are deserving, that inspire us, and it was perfect to do it around Mother’s Day. Any time you can pamper another mom, I think it’s so important. It is a job that never ends, and your kids will never know how much you love them, so it’s nice to be celebrated—that’s the focus of today.

You also have a new book out, The Honest Life. Is its theme similar to the mission of The Honest Company?
JA: Yes, it really just touches on every aspect of one’s life, from putting together a home, to recipes, to shopping for food, to shopping for beauty products, and how to stay organized and fashionable. It’s [about] having a different consciousness when it comes to consuming: invest in pieces that you’re going to have for a long time versus disposable, and look for quality over quantity, and things like that.

How do you find a balance between acting, working with the company, and being a mother on top of it all?
JA: I don’t, really! My kids’ happiness and health is my priority, and as long as they’re good then everything else just sort of falls into place. There’s no perfect formula.

A look from SAIC’s The Walk last weekend.

The Chicago Tribune newsroom sent pizzas to The Boston Globe last month, thanking the staff for its hard work covering the Boston Marathon bombings. This week, The Globe returned the favor with doughnuts and a very inspiring note. [JimRomenesko.com]

Speaking of doughnuts, Lincoln Park shop Glazed & Infused released its summer menu this week—and you won’t believe what’s on it. Hint: one confection is called “the bar snack.” [Chicagoist]

Meanwhile, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago presented its year-end fashion show, The Walk, last weekend, sending some truly awe-inspiring pieces down the runway. Racked has the highlights.

Another art form is taking shape in Chicago: Robert Redford begins production on an eight-part series for CNN about the city, set to premiere next year. [Chicago Business]

In other news, a Windy City illustrator’s work makes a progressive statement for Mother’s Day on the cover of The New Yorker this week. [The New Yorker]

The Trenchermen burger is served at the restaurant’s brand-new Saturday bar brunch.

Trenchermen has been a favorite Sunday spot of ours since it launched brunch in the fall, but this month it gets even better with the debut of a slightly more casual Saturday brunch (10 am-2 pm), served at the bar. Though the new a.m. menu overlaps a little bit with its Sunday counterpart—the signature pretzel cinnamon roll appears on both—it also presents some all-new dishes from executive chefs Pat and Mike Sheerin.

To start, brunch-goers can choose something from the new rotating breakfast bread basket: a selection of savory scones, muffins, and more from pastry chef Lisa Bonjour and sous chef Rebecca LaMalfa. Notable additions on the Saturday menu include the house corned beef with hash brown, fried egg, and picked onions; and the banana bread French toast, which tops an already decadent confection with coffee ice cream and bacon.

Since brunch is served at the bar, drinks are especially important to complementing your fare. Trenchermen offers delicious La Colombe Pure Black—a cold-pressed coffee that comes in a bottle and is perfect for summertime—but for those after something with a little more kick, the cocktails are also superb. We recommend Trenchermen’s Bloody Mary, a mix of chipotle, soy, and lime. 2039 W. North Ave., Wicker Park, 773-661-1540
