Market Restaurant Reveals a Revamped Roof Deck

In a city where practically every restaurant can pull back its front wall of windows to let the outdoors in, Market stands above the rest with its newly renovated rooftop. Although the patio opened to the public earlier this month, the official launch party is set for the weekend of June 1.

With seating for 200 in swanky booths and umbrella-covered tables, and boasting a built-in runway/stage (an ideal spot for the nightly live DJ), the revamped roof is the ultimate place for an evening party. But the absolute clincher on the Near West Side spot is the breathtaking scenery: the deck offers unrivaled 360-degree views of the city.

The available drink menu is extensive, with a few new cocktails hitting the mark for summer. Affair in Paris combines Voli Lyte, champagne, and a house-made strawberry puree; and for the guys, The Gentleman mixes Gentleman Jack Whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters. Market is also the only spot in the city to offer the complete line of Skinnygirl beverages for those seeking a bikini-conscious cocktail, and bottle service is available, too.

Since the new layout is so conducive to sharing appetizers, the Market rooftop will serve a selection of shareable small plates for the first time. Menu mainstays include cheese and meat or hummus platters, and the restaurant’s renowned Market Minis (Wagyu beef sliders). 1113 W. Randolph St., 312-929-4787

Last month, the Merchandise Mart unveiled its DreamHome 2012—a group of showrooms that together create a gorgeous home designed by the city’s top interior designers. The DreamHome, which is open for visitors to view, boasts a bevy of decorating ideas, but none quite so fitting for the season as the outdoor dining space designed by Thomas Bucherie of Thomas Bucherie Designs. Bucherie’s space is modern but inviting, and it’s easy to imagine it filled with friends on a warm summer evening. The designer talks to us about his inspirations and how to make our own outdoor spaces DreamHome-worthy.

What was your inspiration for the DreamHome’s outdoor dining space?
THOMAS BUCHERIE: My inspiration was two-fold: I wanted to showcase products, accessories, and fabrics that had a luxurious feel and were reminiscent of indoor items, while bringing attention to the high-end, quality, and unexpectedly outdoor-friendly products that are available today. Secondly, I wanted to create an environment that mixed contemporary items and rustic pieces. I thought of it as "Miami Beach meets Martha's Vineyard."

How is designing outdoor spaces in Chicago different than in other cities?
TB: Chicago—along with the Midwest in general—really comes alive in the spring and summer; people come out of hibernation and embrace the outdoors. To that end, it's important to provide clients with an exciting but effortless outdoor environment that is not only beautiful and comfortable, but can serve multiple functions. I like to provide clients with the ability to really enjoy and love their outdoor spaces as much as the weather allows.

How can Chicagoans liven up their outdoor spaces for spring?
TB: Add unconventional colors in unexpected ways. [Pieces from] Room and Board's line of 100% recycled furniture, such as the Adirondack, [come] in fresh new colors; we love that it's made from recycled milk jugs! Scatter vividly colored small occasion tables about your current outdoor furniture. Try using electric flame candles in various sizes and colors to add light, interest, and drama to your space, without the hassle and clean-up of wax candles.

What are a few of your favorite places in the city for outdoor furniture and accessories?
TB: Haymaker (5507 N. Clark St.) has brightly colored, powder-coated steel occasional tables. Architectural Artifacts (4325 N. Ravenswood Ave.) is a treasure trove of offbeat and interesting items, and many of them can be repurposed for outdoor use. Primitive Artworks (130 N. Jefferson St.) has an amazing collection of statuary and over-scaled metal pots to dress up an outdoor space. Thomas Bucherie Designs, 1056 W. Lawrence Ave., 312-608-5628

Chicago Creation: Sir & Madame Leather Carrier

Recently, Ukrainian Village boutique Sir & Madame released its unisex leather carrier ($275). Complete with a handheld-device-accessible back pocket and signature Sir & Madame embossed patch, the oversized, limited-edition tote is available in an array of colors. Our pick is the two-tone look of the cognac and tan carrier, but other monochromatic leathers include hazlenut, red, navy, cognac, and pebble grain.

The bag’s translation to both sexes is appropriate considering it was co-designed by the husband-and-wife team behind Sir & Madame, Brian and Autumn Merrit. Heavy-duty handles ensure that the bag is a practical-chic masterpiece for everything from toting a laptop to carrying your favorite newspaper. A slightly shabby leather look is in line with Sir & Madame’s signature style, as is the bag’s locally sourced story—the leather is from Chicago’s Horween Leather Company and the bags are produced in the USA. 938 N. Damen Ave., 773-489-6660

Sky-High Sipping at Chicago's Rooftop Bars

C-View, on the 29th floor of the Affinia Chicago, feels like a secret hideaway.

	C-View
As one of the city's few year-round rooftop bars offering panoramic views of downtown, C-View attracts tourists as well as residential crowds to its exotic outdoor patio and adjacent indoor bar. Less scene-y than other hotel rooftop spots, this 29th-floor lounge of the Affinia Chicago hotel still feels like a secret hideaway. 166 E. Superior St., 312-523-0923

	Drumbar
With an opening this month at the Raffaello Hotel, this spot brings a taste of Miami to the Gold Coast. Pass through dramatic arched doors to hit the two rooftop oases—one features lounge seating and small bites; the other sports cooking grills and a more casual ambiance. Of course, both boast stellar classic cocktails and lake views. 201 E. Delaware Pl., 312-943-5000

	Epic Sky
Arrive early if you expect to nab one of the few cabanas for a couple of rounds of after-work cocktails (cabanas are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with no bottle-service requirement). The crowd is sharp, typically single, and ready to mingle. 112 W. Hubbard St., 312-222-4940

	Lakeview Baseball Club
Getting tickets to this venue to watch the Cubs play is as challenging as scoring first-row seats behind the plate. But once you're in, it's all-inclusive: an open bar and a buffet of burgers, brats, and hot dogs for the duration of the game. Jaw-dropping sight lines, open seating, and easy access to the bathrooms are also nice perks. 3633 N. Sheffield Ave., 773-935-1880

	NoMI Garden
You know it's summer when NoMI Kitchen's patio officially opens for business. The restaurant's 2011 renovation gave it a more approachable vibe, along with an impressive new craft cocktail program and shareable bites. 800 N. Michigan Ave., 312-239-4030

	The Plymouth
Someplace needed to fill the void now that Trader Vic's is no longer a kitschy mai tai joint. This Loop lounge looks and feels like a swingin' sixties watering hole, complete with photos of Hollywood's Rat Pack, as well as legendary Chicago personalities like Mike Ditka, Oprah, and John Cusack on the walls. 327 S. Plymouth Ct., 312-362-1212

	SushiSamba Rio
The vibrant setting and tropical beats add warmth to this rooftop spot no matter what the weather. The bar is completely covered, making it the perfect spot to sip mojitos and caipirinhas whether it's balmy or brisk. Either way, it's a see-and-be-seen kind of bar. 504 N. Wells St., 312-595-2300

The Terrace at The Peninsula Chicago
Adjacent to the splendid Shanghai Terrace Chinese restaurant, The Terrace is one of the more luxurious rooftops in the city. Here, you'll sip Champagne or cognac on luxurious, plush, custom-designed outdoor furniture that you'll instantly covet for your own home. 108 E. Superior St., 312-573-6744

	The Terrace at Trump
Those without access to a summer rooftop with views of Navy Pier's twice-weekly fireworks can camp out here for the perfect sight lines. Seating is hard to come by, so reservations are highly recommended. Premium cocktails—like the $81 Iva Sefulu, made with Gran Patrón Platinum tequila, Grand Marnier 150, and Mediterranean sea salt—and seasonal punch bowls make the experience extra special. 401 N. Wabash Ave., 312-588-8000

	Vertigo Sky Lounge
Clubby crowds in designer jeans and dresses frequent the Dana Hotel and Spa's showy cocktail bar with a Vegas attitude. DJs spin high-energy music and there's plenty of eye candy to go around. 2 W. Erie St., 312-202-6060

We got Gambaccini’s take on her favorite nearby haunts and the scoop on an event she’s hosting tomorrow night at Juicy Couture.

What do you love most about Lincoln Park?
JENA GAMBACCINI: I like to explore various neighborhoods in the city and Lincoln Park is the perfect central location. It’s got that neighborhood feel without being too secluded.

How would you describe the style of people that live there?
JG: Overall it's a pretty casual and easy-going neighborhood; there are a lot of college students, and moms wearing Lululemon [Athletica].

What are some of your favorite neighborhood places to eat and shop?
JG: I get all of my beauty products at Blueberry Moon (2108 N. Halsted St.), and all the shops on Armitage Avenue (between Sheffield Ave. and Halsted St.) are really great. There's a lot of great food too—Cookie Bar (2475 N. Lincoln Ave.) has the best cookies in the city; Floriole (1220 W. Webster Ave.) is one of my favorite bakeries; and for a casual atmosphere and great food, DMK (2954 N. Sheffield Ave.) and Fish Bar (2956 N. Sheffield Ave.) are my favorites.

Describe the perfect day in your neighborhood, and what would be your ideal outfit for it?
JG: If I'm not working and it's nice outside, I like to just take a walk—and sometimes I find myself at Sweet Mandy B's (1208 W. Webster Ave.). For work and on the weekends, my typical outfit includes bright or printed pants, wedges, and a loose blouse. I don't feel like myself unless I have some color on, so you'll always find at least one bright element in every one of my outfits. For evening, I love a good shift dress.

Catch Gambaccini in person at Oak Street’s Juicy Couture outpost tomorrow night, Wednesday, May 16, 6-8 PM. The label’s spring and summer collections will be on display/for sale, and Gambaccini will be on hand to style perfect weekend wardrobes for the season. Cocktails, light bites, sketch illustrations, and a donation made to PAWS are more enticing reasons to attend.
Local Interior Designers Delight at LA’s LEGENDS of La Cienega

Last week, the shops of the La Cienega Design Quarter temporarily proffered control of their front window spaces to interior designers as part of the fourth annual LEGENDS of La Cienega event. Although in the past exclusive to local LA designers, this year’s LEGENDS broadened its scope to include top designers and a few up-and-comers from around the nation and even the world—among them Nate Berkus and Suzanne Lovell of Chicago. The expansion pays appropriate homage to the 2012 theme, Windows to the World.

For his display, Nate Berkus channeled Mexico City behind the window of antiques and furniture shop Hollywood at Home. In true Berkus style, the display draws on vibrant colors, with neutral geometric objects balancing out the floor-to-ceiling greenery. The result is a space that literally brings the outdoors in.

Just a few blocks north, Suzanne Lovell designed a display at Hollyhock, an eclectic antiques and decorative arts store. Rather than spotlighting a single location as her muse, Lovell was inspired by literary journeys—the places discovered when reading a book. Her space reflects that idea with soft yellows and cozy chairs, just begging for a relaxing book read. The window displays will remain up until May 18.

This season marks the 45th anniversary of the Museum of Contemporary Art’s decision in the late 1960s to become a collecting institution. In "First Fifty," a new exhibit that opened over the weekend, the museum pays tribute to the first 50 artworks it collected (from 1968 through 1974), the cornerstone pieces that subsequently shaped the identity of the MCA.

Of those premiere pieces, only 19 remain in the MCA’s permanent collection—some were sold to private individuals in auction and will be displayed as photographic reproductions. The other missing items were deaccessioned and are represented in this exhibit by related materials from the archives. Displayed in chronological order, the exhibit starts with a sculpture entitled Six Women by Marisol, a Venezuelan artist that was donated to the MCA in 1968. The 49 works following include pieces from Enrico Baj, Alexander Calder, Chuck Close, and many more. "First Fifty" runs through August 19. 220 E. Chicago Ave., 312-280-2660
Chicago Native Turned Swiss Watch Designer

Octavio Garcia. BELOW: The Openworked Extra-Thin Royal Oak Limited Edition 40th Anniversary watch.

Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Octavio Garcia is one of Switzerland's foremost watch designers. As chief artistic officer at Audemars Piguet, he has spearheaded the design of the brand's 40th anniversary collection of its famed Royal Oak watch.

No overnight success, Garcia dropped out of high school to make money, working odd jobs in the steel and automotive industries before earning his GED. At 22, he was restless, so he moved to Europe, where he fell in love with and eventually married a Swiss girl.

"When I moved to Switzerland, I decided to look for a school," says Garcia. He happened upon the Art Center College of Design.

Garcia graduated with a degree in industrial design before finding his way to Omega Watch Company, where he learned the purity of watch design. In 2003 he answered a newspaper ad for a position at Audemars Piguet, and the rest is history. Garcia has been lending his own sense of contemporary style to Audemars Piguet for the last nine years, as he has redesigned and showcased the brand's Millenary collection, and for the past three years he has worked diligently to design the new 40th Anniversary Royal Oak collection. The Royal Oak, first unveiled in 1972, was the world's first luxury sport watch, created in stainless steel with a now-iconic octagonal design. It has been a leading product for the brand since.

"We all discussed what we could do to pay homage to the groundbreaking watch, and agreed that offering pure, sophisticated beauty was key." says Garcia. "Often I am inspired by fashion or the automotive industry, but for this creation, I turned to our museum."

The 40th Anniversary series includes several amazing pieces that recall the original tapestry- dial design. Produced entirely in-house, they offer a crisp, grid-work dial pattern. Among the new creations is the Openworked Extra-Thin Royal Oak Limited Edition 40th Anniversary in 950 platinum, and the 39mm, 247-part Extra-Thin Royal Oak, which comes as close to the original as possible.

"I am drawn by the aesthetics of the brand, and love to take it to the next level in all I design," says Garcia. "Our clients are demanding and expect excitement from us. We need to deliver."

Chicago Creation: Jeneration X

For the perfect summer read, pack Chicagoan Jen Lancaster’s latest memoir, Jeneration X (NAL, $30), in your beach bag. The pages provide a hilarious look at the author (and fellow Gen X-ers) as she attempts to—finally—act her age. A nationwide tour brings Lancaster back to Chicago on Monday, where she’ll be signing copies of the new book at Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville (7 PM).

Lancaster’s breakout memoir, Bitter is the New Black, was published in 2006 and instantly became a cult classic. Since then, she has published five other memoirs and one novel. Although each of the memoirs focuses on different issues—money problems, surviving in a big city, her struggle with weight, and in Jeneration X, coming to terms with adulthood, Lancaster’s books chronicle the comical and all-too-relatable misadventures of a young adult living and working in the city. She tackles topics from grief to karma to buying a house by putting her own signature spin on them, and never fails to keep readers laughing while she does it.

For tonight’s A Taste for the Arts 30th anniversary gala, Hendrick’s Gin pays tribute to Chicago chef Rick Bayless and his Mexican cuisine by introducing a new cocktail, La Luna, during the event’s quick-fire challenge.

Tickets for the event, which benefits the Chicago Academy for the Arts, are sold out, but the ultra-refreshing, Bayless-inspired drink can be mixed up at home, too. The fresh combination of gin, lime, cucumber juice, and jalapeno syrup makes for the perfect summer patio cocktail.

	La Luna

	2 parts Hendrick’s Gin
2 parts soda
1 part fresh lime juice
1 part cucumber juice (pass whole, unpeeled English cucumbers through a juice extractor)
1 part mild jalapeno syrup (see below)

	Jalapeno Syrup:
Core and chop 8 jalapenos and muddle into 2 cups raw sugar to form a thick paste. Add 2 cups water and heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves; reduce to 1.5 cups. Adjust the spiciness by adding the jalapeno seeds, then strain and chill.

	La Luna:
Combine gin, cucumber juice, lime juice, and jalapeno syrup in a tall glass. Add ice and top off with soda; garnish with a salted cucumber spear.

Q&A With: Wellness Expert Shea Vaughn

The mind-body revolution is captivating the health and fitness world, and Shea Vaughn is leading the way with her SheaNetics lifestyle and workout routine. As a longtime dancer and a certified professional in more than a dozen different fitness routines from yoga to spinning to gyrokenesis, Vaughn (mother to actor Vince Vaughn) has combined her love of movement and understanding of wellness to create a system that truly helps women look and feel great. We spoke with the Chicago-area resident about SheaNetics, and the keys to happiness and health at any age.

What are the main components of the SheaNetics system?
SHEA VAUGHN: I realized that [we] don't have time to take four or five hours of workout classes a day for strength, cardio, and flexibility, and most people probably wouldn't want to. Meshing workouts together into a one-hour class was a good way to expose my clients to an array of activities such as pilates, yoga, tai chi, and dance. The Five Living Principles which I incorporate in my classes and in life are integral to anything we do in our lives, relationships, athletic pursuits, or careers: Commitment, Perseverance, Self-Control, Integrity, and Love.

You emphasize the mind-body connection in your method. Why is this so important?
SV: The mind leads and the body follows. If your mind doesn't buy in to what your body needs to do—for example, exercise in order to avoid being at risk for diabetes or heart [problems]—the body will not cooperate. When the body stops resisting what the mind knows needs to be done, things flip around so that the body will actually tell the mind what it needs to do to be healthy.

What do you feel is the key to staying happy and healthy at any age?
SV: Having clarity and being in the present moment are the keys. Realize there are certain situations we cannot change and accept them for what they are; we gain clarity by doing so. Using the Five Living Principles brings answers, solutions, and balance into my life.

What has been the best or most rewarding part of your career up to this point?
SV: Having the opportunity to find a greater audience and touch people's hearts and make a difference in their journey to finding their own wellbeing has been the most rewarding for me.

With opportunities to entertain outside looming, it’s time to make your outdoor space green and pristine with classes from West Town’s Sprout Home. Store founder Tara Heibel has an eye for design that raises gardening—as well as terrarium building, bouquet arranging, and patio decoration—to another level entirely. Each month, a handful of classes are offered in the appropriately chlorophyll-colored space, from terrarium building (a Sprout specialty), to container gardening, to information sessions about different flower types.

Since 2003, Heibel and her team have designed numerous gardens in the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and other Chicago neighborhoods, as well as executed plant design for commercial locations like the Wicker Park Café. The store has been so successful that Heibel even expanded to a second location in Brooklyn in 2007. Whether it’s on-site planting help you need, or simply a unique garden object to grace your patio this summer, Sprout Home is blooming with possibilities. 745 N. Two Charlie Trotter vets opened this quaint Lincoln Park spot where you can score brunch daily. The seasonal menu, which includes delicious cocktails, features standards like eggs Benedict or quiche, but ups the ante with shrimp and grits, and a decadent foie gras "pop tart."
Big Jones
Going deep into the vintage South, chef/owner Paul Fehribach presents a brunch menu showcasing pan-fried sweetbreads with an oyster sauce from 1867, Reconstruction Era corn cakes, and gold rice- and corn flour-breaded fried trout circa 1930.
5347 N. Clark St., 773-275-5725

	Bongo Room
At Bongo Room's newest location in Andersonville, owners Derrick Robles and John Latino give North Siders a place of their own for their chocolate tower French toast or cilantro-jalapeño-wrapped breakfast burrito. And you can always get a cup of coffee while you wait, because you will wait.
There's a reason Ina Pinkney has been dubbed the Breakfast Queen. "Have some Heavenly Hots, a scrapple, or nosh on the coffee cake," she'll say. You have no choice but to obey, and why shouldn't you? Pinkney has been a force in Chicago's morning scene for years and her country-feeling restaurant in the West Loop continues to thrive. 1235 W. Randolph St., 312-226-8227

	Jam
Jam closed its Ukrainian Village location, but before people could revolt, this newer, airy spot opened. The menu still features chef Jeff Mauro's signature malted custard French toast, guisado verde featuring corn risotto, and the decadent Jamburger with butterkase and an egg sunny side-up. 3057 W. Logan Blvd., 773-292-6011

	Lula Cafe
Lula, one of Chicago's original organic-leaning, market-driven restaurants, celebrated its 12th birthday by doubling in size and adding a slew of menu items. Whether you visit for weekday breakfast or weekend brunch, chef Jason Hammel's locally sourced, high-quality ingredients will make your meal memorable.
Perennial Virant
Few chefs source products as locally as Paul Virant, and no matter the season, his restaurant will make the most of available ingredients. The dining room provides great views while diners indulge in Laughing Bird shrimp with grits and a Bloody Mary with pickled vegetables. 1800 N. Lincoln Ave., 312-981-7070

Stop in for maple-glazed pork shoulder with a sunny side-up egg and grits or waffles with peach-lavender conserve, then toss in a spicy Bloody with a beer back. If you're on the move, pop across the street to Publican Quality Meats, grab a cup of Lucifer house blend by Intelligentsia, some rustic bread, and house-cured meats, and be on your way. 837 W. Fulton St., 312-733-9555

	Pump Room
At Pump Room, Jean-Georges Vongerichten has implemented a breakfast that blows away your typical hotel. Keep it simple with fresh berry-topped oatmeal or go big with the frittata with bacon and asparagus, or the classic wiener schnitzel revived from the original restaurant's glory days. 1301 N. State Pkwy., 312-601-2970

Sprout recently enclosed its patio to create a warm, sun-filled room, and with that, chef Dale Levitski launched an "adults only" weekend brunch, where you can enjoy his refined menu and plenty of house-made Bloody Marys sans toddler interruption. 1417 W.

Troy Graves’ summer-perfect spot, Red Door, celebrated its official opening on Thursday. The 1,100-sq.-ft. resto’s main event is a shaded outdoor patio more than twice the size of its indoor space, with seating for 100 people and a standing capacity for four times that.

Red Door is chef Graves’ second rendez-vous at this address. Most recently Duchamp, the venue was once home to Meritage Café and Wine Bar, where Graves met Christopher Peckat, then the owner/operator of Meritage and his current partner in opening Red Door (along with Fei Tang). With this latest venture, the vision is “globally-inspired pub fare.” Japanese, German, and Spanish are just a few of the cultures represented—via dishes like soy cured salmon, rabbit schnitzel, and grilled baby octopus, respectively. The menu section titled “On Bread” spotlights sandwiches from the Red Door Burger with bacon-onion jam; to lamb neck sloppy joe; to a fava bean pesto toast with burrata, strawberries, and pancetta vinaigrette.

For drinks, it’s a seasonally rotating signature cocktail menu dreamed up by mixologist Jeremiah Krickhahn, using Graves’ fare as inspiration. As a summer tribute, Krickhahn invented the Yuzu Julep, a take on the classic Mint Julep that replaces mint with Japanese shiso and bourbon with Japanese whiskey, plus a twist of yuzu juice.

In the coming months, stay tuned for themed outdoor brunch events, barbacoa, and animal roasts. Until then, enjoy what the red-painted door signifies—"welcome." 2118 N. Damen Ave., 773-697-7221

	Relaxing
When it comes to mom’s special day, there are two foolproof types of presents—spa treatments and chocolates. Combine them with The Dana Hotel’s Chocolate Candy Facial, a nourishing treatment that uses caramel serum to hydrate alongside a soothing vanilla mask, and chocolate vanilla oil to massage the neck and shoulders ($135–175). 660 N. State St., 312-202-6040

	Traditional
H.BLOOM, the revolutionary flower delivery service, has put together more than a dozen gorgeous gift bouquets for all types of mothers. Our favorites are the feminine Garden Delight arrangement ($110), which combines classic roses and pink ranunculus; and the eclectic aesthetic of the flowering Dogwood Branches ($105). hbloom.com/gifts

	Unique
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago offers gifts galore for Mother’s Day, from the classic—a beautiful coffee table book, for instance—to the quirky. Falling somewhere in the middle of that spectrum is the Pooley Vase, designed by Todd Newgren ($30). Eight separate colored ceramic tubes make for a modern and organic way to display mom's favorite flowers or herbs. 220 E. Chicago Ave., 312-280-2660

For drivers up to the challenge, Aston Martin opens its performance driving course today for the start of the 2012 driving season. Nestled in the pristine, forested hills of Romeo, MI, the Performance Driving Course’s Proving Ground provides car enthusiasts with more than 100 miles of asphalt to plow through every conceivable element and obstacle the road may throw their way—from hairpin turns and rolling hills to serpentine, coursing trails.

A team of expert instructors will be on hand to guide drivers—both current and prospective Aston Martin owners—through the lengthy, labyrinthine course in a one-on-one, full-day lesson ($2,500). Testers are invited to take one of Aston Martin’s four-wheeled beauties out onto the closed-course, where they’ll master apex-hugging turns and booming accelerations, and hit the throttle on breakneck, high-speed straightaways. Drivers can even take their model of choice for a spin on the course’s experimental skid pad, designed to push the vehicle’s handling to its tire-squealing, gut-wrenching limits.

For decades, Aston Martin has stood as the premiere purveyor of British automobiles. The brand’s vehicles are finely crafted beasts of sleek, steel beauty, and primal power, and offer precision handling and impressive horsepower. A vehicle built with such detailed craftsmanship commands that its driver be worthy to get behind the wheel, and there’s no better way to test your mettle than on the automaker’s Proving Ground this season. Call 888-724-8840 or e-mail pdcusa@astonmartin.com to make a reservation at least one week in advance.

Barneys New York will add textile designer Madeline Weinrib’s latest exclusive collection of gorgeous home accessories to its incredible repertoire. With this line, Weinrib translates her signature ikat-print textiles into hard lacquered home accents—the five pieces include serving trays in two sizes, a stationery box, pencil box, and Parsons table.

While the full line will be available at Barneys’ New York City flagship and barneys.com, Chicago’s Oak Street store will carry a few select items. The pencil box ($395) will be sold in three signature patterns—graphite mor ikat, black stripe ikat, and black chevron block—and the small serving tray ($495) will also be available. Each replicates Weinrib’s designs so closely that the pieces look soft to the touch from afar. 15 E. Oak St., 312-587-1700

The idea of employees being stopped at the door because they've doused themselves in No. 5 or getting fired because of a devotion to Angel may seem far-fetched. But in January, perfume prohibition took on a new momentum when New Hampshire State Representative Michele Peckham sponsored a bill to ban state employees from wearing scent to work. "It came about because I received a letter from a constituent who had a seizure she believed was caused by the fragrance worn by a state employee," says Peckham. "I did a lot of research and I thought it was a valid point."

No action has been enforced as yet; the bill was killed in committee. But scent is no stranger to controversy. Back in the '80s, Giorgio Beverly Hills was famously banned in several LA restaurants for being as obnoxious as the sizes of the shoulder pads worn by the clientele. "The trail for Giorgio not only went ahead of you," says perfumer Stephen J. Nilsen, "it opened the door for you."

But with perfume being a $3.1 billion-a-year industry in the US the fact remains: We are wedded to our scents. So should we be told when and where we are allowed to wear them?

"I think the idea of banning perfume is silly—soon people won't even be allowed to wear perfume to the theater," laments French perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, whose best-selling counter in the US is at Neiman Marcus in Chicago. "If you have that one person who is allergic, I don't see why you can't find an agreement within the office."

Of course no one should be asked to compromise his or her health to earn a living. But consider this: Research has shown that some fragrances can significantly enhance performance in the workplace—floral and jasmine scents can increase reaction times by nearly 20 percent; peppermint amps up working memory; and finding out the opposition's choice of ice cream flavor could help you steer them in your favor (but more on that later).

"People perceive you are as you smell, and this goes for the workplace too," says Dr. Alan R. Hirsch from The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. "The influence of odors on mood has been well researched, with pleasant ones inducing feelings of happiness, and unpleasant smells evoking anger and fear. But we found in a study using baseball players as the subjects that reaction times increased by 17 percent when jasmine was introduced into their performance. And this translates into the office environment too."

As for eucalyptus, menthol, and camphor promoting harmony within the workforce: "We found these smells enhance empathy and the result is decreased aggression in an office," explains Dr. Hirsch. "You really can use odors to a positive effect."

Some benefits can be measured physiologically too. "Aromas such as nutmeg, peppermint, and green apple reduce the blood pressure elevation associated with anxiety," adds Dr. Hirsch. Chances are, in a professional setting you'll want to smell more sophisticated than apples and peppermint, but by choosing a fragrance that incorporates these keynotes, you reap the olfactory rewards while smelling work-appropriate.

And those about to negotiate a big deal take note: In the thrust of negotiation, research has shown that fragrance can make others more compliant. In a 2006 study, Dr. Hirsch identified that a subject's favorite ice cream flavor denotes a specific personality type, and they react positively to its aroma too.

A vanilla ice cream lover, for example, should react well to a small splash of Lancôme Trésor Midnight Rose, which contains the note. Sounds half-baked? Nilsen assures, "It may not put you in their favor but it could well prevent you from being rejected."

Those toiling away in shoebox-sized offices should also remember that the scent of green apple and cucumber makes people perceive spaces to be larger. In other words, a dash of DKNY Be Delicious could compensate for cramped quarters.

Given the potential benefits, perhaps scent at work should be encouraged rather than outlawed. The key is either choose a very lightweight scent, along the lines of Estée Lauder's White Linen, or, if your signature perfume is particularly potent—an Opium or a Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb—use it sparingly.

Perhaps Michele Peckham's own crusade sprung from a childhood of people overspraying. "The funny thing is that my father always wore a ton of cologne," she admits. "There are some people who go crazy overboard."

Chicago-based perfumer Heidi Sauhammel says it's all about restraint. "If you overapply you are going to cause a fragrance invasion. Use a light hand: One dab or spritz behind the ear and on the wrist is plenty."

Christy Turlington Burns Advocates for Mothers Everywhere

This Sunday—Mother’s Day—supermodel-turned-activist Christy Turlington Burns will disappear, rendering herself unreachable via phone, e-mail, and social media. And she’s encouraging other mothers to do the same.

This Mother's Day boycott is part of Turlington Burns' No Mother’s Day campaign, which encourages mothers everywhere to keep quiet on a day dedicated to them—a silence meant to speak volumes about what it would be like if mothers weren’t around. Driven by a short No Mothers Day PSA film, directed by Turlington Burns' husband, filmmaker Ed Burns, the movement hopes to bring awareness to maternal mortality rates (roughly 358,000 women die each year due to issues with pregnancy and childbirth).

Turlington Burns is no stranger to this issue. No Mother’s Day is an offshoot of Turlington Burns' own organization, Every Mother Counts, which is itself an extension of her directorial/documentary debut, a heart-wrenching film called No Woman, No Cry, screened for the first time in Chicago last month at the Gene Siskel Film Center. In the documentary, Turlington Burns and a small crew travel to four different locations—Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala, and the United States—visiting with women and families who are battling largely preventable maternal health issues, whether it be poor access to proper care, social stigmas, or life-threatening complications.

The idea for the film came after Turlington Burns suffered complications during the birth of her first child, daughter Grace, now 8 (son Finn is 6). Though she and her daughter emerged healthy, she learned that a shocking number of women do not overcome issues like her own.

Since completing the film and premiering it on the OWN network around Mother’s Day last year, Turlington Burns has taken to the road, screening the film in cities across the country to raise awareness for the cause close to her heart. “Since I finished the film, it’s really just been about getting it in front of as many audiences as possible,” she says. “It’s one thing to hear the information, but oftentimes statistics alone—as shocking as they are—just don’t make that impact like seeing human faces does.”

Such passion for the issue was something that set Turlington Burns apart from other filmmakers while creating her documentary. “Our small [film] crew went into it knowing that we didn’t want to witness this,” she says. “That was the beauty of not being a traditional vérité documentarian; I want to be part of the solution to the issue.” Case in point: there is one touching scene in the film in which, seeing no safer alternative, the film crew offers to drive Janet, a mother in Tanzania, to a hospital for proper care while having her child. “We really wanted to see as best we could what [would happen] without us, but at the same time not push the boundaries, where [these women] would be put in any additional harm’s way. It was really a gut thing.”

It's that same urge to help that drives Turlington Burns' latest cause, No Mother's Day. Speaking of gut reactions, we challenge you not to hold back tears as you watch No Mother’s Day’s powerful video and No Woman, No Cry. Bentley made a statement the night before the Geneva International Motor Show during VW’s Group Night, where each of the parent company’s brands showcased their latest and most spectacular vehicles. The British luxury maker wowed the crowd with its first SUV concept, EXP 9 F.

Massive 23-inch alloy wheels; the signature bold Bentley grille; a powerful 6-liter W12 engine that can make up to 600 horsepower; an 8-speed transmission; a fold-down champagne cooler; and luxury tailgating fit for the Kentucky Derby, seem to overly exceed expectations of consumers looking to purchase an ultra-elite SUV. Bentley’s sports utility vehicle is in competition with other luxe cars like the Range Rover and Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo. While the design and composition keep all the usual Bentley trappings, it is unknown if this foray into SUVs will be met with negative or positive feedback.

With a constantly evolving menu, Art + Science is a perpetual pioneer of what's new in color techniques and trends; it's currently the only salon using Revlon Professional's new color line, Revlonissimo. In her almost 10 years at the helm, color director Susan Hurley has colored the hair of rock royalty and big-screen starlets. 1971 N. Halsted St., 312-787-4247; 1554 N. The legendary Oak Street salon has been in business for 39 years, offering on-trend cuts and colors. Ifergan colorists find inspiration from cultures around the world: For this season, color director George Zafiris—a master of correcting botched dye jobs—debuts Hot & Cool, a new effect that adds pop to lowlights. 106 E. Oak St., 312-642-4484

Behind the fabulous hair of the models and dancers at Macy's Glamorama are stylists from Joseph Michael's, the event's partner for the past three years. Senior stylist Vesna Kozomora, the "queen of micro-highlighting," is known for her ultrathin and delicate highlight patterns.1313 N. Ritchie Court, 312-482-9800

Mario Tricoci Hair Salon & Day Spa
Always a go-to for top tresses, Mario Tricoci has more color options than we can count. When Hollywood comes to town, it's often Tricoci colorist Nelida D'Alessandro that sweeps new color into celebrity locks—she worked on Amber Heard and Jenna Dewan Tatum for Playboy Club and keeps up color for the stars of the series Boss. 900 N. Michigan Ave., 847-202-1900

	Maxine Salon
Maxine Salon is Chicago's flagship L'Oréal Professionnel Haircolor Center. A color veteran of more than 15 years, Tina Deeke loves a challenge—she's a must for those with curly hair. Deeke developed Bali-Curl, in which she paints into the round part of the curl, creating light, reflections, and depth. 712 N. Rush St., 312-751-1511

	Michael & Michael
Michael & Michael is one of the few hair-only boutiques left, which allows its technicians to focus on crafting the perfect 'do. Colorists Rebecca Poole and Marta Lopez are always up to date on tress trends, having most recently studied balayage and ombre with Nancy Braun from the L'Oréal Professionnel Soho Academy in NYC. 365 W. Chicago Ave., 312-951-0779

	Mixed Co. Salon
With nationally renowned colorist Patrick Ryan at the helm, Mixed Co. is the only truly balayage-focused salon in Chicago. Ryan has even developed his own version of the freehand color technique, dubbed "Painted by Patrick," and he colors the hair of many of Chicago's favorite sports wives. 223 W. Erie St., 312-929-2627

This Gold Coast favorite is home to one of the steadiest hands in highlights, Jillian Seely, whose balayage treatment is a must-try. The foil-free treatment lasts up to a month longer than regular highlights and grows out more naturally. Celebs love Seely, too: Rose McGowan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jeremy Piven have all occupied her chair. 939 N. Rush St., 312-943-7404

	Salon Buzz
The beauty buzz for blondes: Colorist Sherri Richards is the best of the best. Her specialty is blonde hair in any shade, but she's also an expert in color corrections. Owner Andreas Zafiriadis runs his business on the philosophy that knowledge is essential, so Richards and her colleagues are continually up to speed on new techniques and trends. 310 W. Superior St. and 1 E. Delaware Pl., 312-943-5454

The Ultimate Eye Cream: ProCell Triple Action

Brand-new anti-aging eye treatment ProCell Triple Action from Mario Tricoci makes locals proud with its started-in-Chicago story. The revolutionary eye cream was dreamed up by Mario Tricoci’s director of retail Cheryl Santucci and is now sold exclusively at Mario Tricoci Salons and Day Spas in the Chicago area.

Tricoci spa offers a variety of in-spa treatments to turn back the clock on your skin, but ProCell Triple Action eye treatment ($65) is a do-it-yourself treatment for use at home. The product is based around the Matricol collagen eye mask, with ingredients such as apple stem cell extract to stimulate the stem cells’ self-renewal potential; Baicalin to prolong cell division; and Resveratrol, an increasingly popular anti-aging ingredient that protects cells against free radicals like UV rays. Used once per week, the treatment firms and soothes the area around the eyes over time and provides intense hydration almost immediately.

While we won’t be forgoing our favorite spa services anytime soon, the new ProCell Triple Action Eye Treatment is the perfect product to bring on all our summer travels. We might even take our sunglasses off more this season.
