You established your line in the mid ’90s, just after you were married. What did your dress look like?
MONIQUE LHUILLIER: It was an off-the-shoulder ball gown silhouette with a dropped waist. It had little flowers on it. The back was low and it had a bustle with a long train and lots of roses dripping down the back.
Bridesmaids are often underserved, fashionable speaking. What is your philosophy on bridesmaid dresses, and how does your new line reflect that?
ML: I’ve always wanted to dress the entire wedding party; it just took me longer to do this because we were developing other collections along the way. Bridesmaids should complement the bride, never overpower her. The line I created is very soft and very pretty and it contours to the body, but it’s never too over-the-top.
How would you describe your own personal style?
ML: Very elegant and chic. I like to experiment, mix classic pieces with more fashionable pieces, and give it my own twist—because everyday I feel differently. That’s the beauty of being a woman. You can dress differently 365 days of the year and reinvent yourself.
We know you for bridal, but you’ve also branched out into ready-to-wear, home décor, and stationery. What is next for the brand?
ML: We’d like to continue developing an accessories line to go with my collection—shoes, handbags, and fine jewelry. I’d love to do engagement rings and wedding bands. Once we have those in place, [I’d like to] open more flagship stores across the world, like in London and Hong Kong.
