An apple a day keeps the doctor away—but what about 12,000 pounds of apples, 1,500 slices of apple pie and 400 cups of apple cider? It’s just a day in the life of Apple Fest, a daylong annual event in the family-friendly Lincoln Square neighborhood. In recognition of 23 years of successful festivals, this year the city is shutting down the streets for the first time, transforming the 4700 block of Lincoln Avenue into a pedestrian walkway.
“There’s nothing better than relishing the season on a cool, crisp fall day and enjoying all things apple,” says Melissa Flynn, executive director of the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce. Three dozen vendors will line the block to sell seasonal fare from candy apples to winter-ready scarves. Attendees will be able to taste-test winning selections from an apple-themed recipe contest; children’s games, cooking classes and farm-fresh fruit and veggie stands are other highlights at this September staple.
While six varieties of the juicy fruit are up for eating, Flynn says that visitors devour Honeycrisp by the bushel.
Apple Fest is Saturday, September 25, from 8 AM to 3 PM on the 4700 block of Lincoln Avenue. For more information, visit lincolnsquare.org.
