Renovations and a delectable food and drink menu will draw crowds.

Just steps from Michigan Avenue, and with the Chicago skyline as its backdrop, Oak Street Beach is an unexpected departure from the urbanity of downtown. This year, Oak Street Beach Food and Drink features a facelift to its bar area. A newly expanded, four-sided structure makes for easier ordering and offers views of both downtown and glistening Lake Michigan.
With open-air ordering and scattered table seating, the spot's bar, fish shack, and taco shack give the beach an almost Caribbean feel, a vibe the refreshing cocktails and cuisine reinforce. Sip an ice-cold frozen pina colada or blueberry limeade, or peach and basil blueberry mojitos while listening to a live band. For food, the Fish Shack offers signature surf items such as a shrimp Louie sandwich with baby shrimp, celery, and green onion; the corresponding Taco Shack serves up chipotle-marinated chicken nachos.
Secluded by a bend on Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street has long been our favorite beach spot in the city—a revamped bar is just one more reason to spend our summers there. 1001 N. Lake Shore Dr., 773-975-3614
